Defeat of Hakims and craze of Khilji

This is from the end of the 12th century. Bakhtiyar Khilji, the commander of the then ruler of Magadha, Qutubuddin Aibak, fell very ill. His doctors worked day and night, but Khilji’s health kept deteriorating. When there was no hope of survival, someone advised him to get treatment from Acharya Rahul Sribhadra, head of the Ayurveda department of Nalanda University.

Khilji was strictly against getting treatment from non-Muslims. But to save his life he called Acharya. Khilji put a strange condition before Acharya that he would not eat any Indian medicine or herb given by him.

The miracle of the pages of the Quran

Acharya Rahul Shribhadra accepted Khilji’s condition. After a few days, he reached Khilji with a Quran. He told Khilji that he would have to read a few pages of this Quran every day for a few days. Khilji did the same and within no time he was completely cured.

Actually, Acharya had applied a paste on the corners of the pages of the Quran. When Khilji spit and turned the pages, the medicine would enter his body through his tongue.

Crazy Sultan burst into flames of jealousy

After recovery, Khilji was not happy but deeply jealous. He was shocked that the work which his great doctors could not do, was done so easily by Indian doctors. He could not tolerate Indian knowledge and science.

In the fire of this jealousy and hatred, he attacked Nalanda University in the year 1193. He brutally killed thousands of unarmed Buddhist monks and teachers there.

The peak of knowledge kept burning for three months

Khilji wanted to eradicate the knowledge of Nalanda. He set fire to the huge library of the university, Dharamganj. This library had nine storey buildings, which contained more than 90 lakh priceless manuscripts of mathematics, astronomy, medicine and philosophy.
