IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal told PTI that it had become “impossible” to hold the final at the stadium with a relatively small capacity due to the high demand for complimentary tickets. M Chinnaswamy Stadium has a capacity of approximately 35,000 spectators.

This season’s playoff matches will be played in Dharamshala (26 May) and New Chandigarh (27 and 29 May), while the title match will be held on 31 May at Narendra Modi Stadium.
“KSCA is entitled to get complimentary tickets up to 15 per cent of the stadium capacity. However, KSCA had demanded an additional 10,057 tickets,” the source said.

Of these, about 900 passes were required only to meet the demands of the members of the state assembly. He said, “KSCA had agreed to give three complimentary passes each to the MLAs and Legislative Council Members, which amounts to approximately 900 passes. Additionally, additional commitments with the Expert Committee and the Government of Karnataka required an additional 750 complimentary tickets over and above the standard 15 per cent.”

This would have left only 20,000 tickets for fans. The source also said that KSCA also required some paid tickets at concessional rates. “This included 3,007 tickets at a concessional rate of Rs 2,000 in the P3 stand for cricket playing clubs and 900 tickets in the Members Stand for spouses and children of members,” he said. Besides this, the association was also required to purchase 1,000 tickets at an average rate of around Rs 2,000 in the M4 stand and 3,500 tickets for life members in various stands.

These figures confirm Dhumal’s statement. He said, “The capacity of the (Chinnaswamy) stadium is also not very high. There were very few tickets available there even for the league matches. Since the IPL final attracts people from all over the world, we have to ensure more availability of tickets for the fans.”
