Started the journey of acting at the age of 6

Kolkata-born Nargis left an indelible mark in Indian cinema in her three decade long career. She started as a child artist at the age of just 6 and is still known for her roles in classic films like ‘Mother India’ and iconic films like ‘Raat Aur Din’. She was the first actress of Indian cinema to be honored with ‘Padmashree’. With this, she also became the first actress to be nominated in the Rajya Sabha.

Jodi got a lot of love with Raj Kapoor

He made his debut at the age of just 6 with the 1935 film ‘Talaash-e-Haq’. However, her first film as a lead actress was Mehboob Khan’s ‘Taqdeer’. In the 1940s and 1950s, he worked in many blockbuster films with Raj Kapoor. Their on-screen chemistry was greatly loved by the audience and it is also said that the pair was very close in real life too.

When marriage did not work out, Nargis decided to separate.

It is said that Raj Kapoor lost his heart after seeing Nargis on the sets of the film ‘Barsaat’ or ‘Andaz’ in 1948. The on-screen chemistry of both was unmatched and they were considered complementary to each other. Nargis wanted to marry Raj Kapoor, but Raj Kapoor refused to leave his wife. Seeing the uncertainty of the future, Nargis separated herself from this relationship after nine years.

New story started from the set of ‘Mother India’

Then, times changed and Nargis met Sunil Dutt on the sets of the film ‘Mother India’. Sunil Dutt saved the life of the actress in the fire on the set, after which both of them got married in 1958. They have three children – Sanjay Dutt, Namrata Dutt and Priya Dutt.
