Many students dream of knowing the mysterious world of space, shining stars, planets like Moon and Mars closely and working on them. Whenever there is talk of space and science, the first name that comes to mind is NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). This is America’s government space agency, which works on space missions, satellites, research and new technology.

Many students think that getting a job in NASA is very difficult or possible only for selected people. Whereas the truth is that if you move forward with right studies, right direction and full hard work, then this dream can also become reality. So let us know how to get a job in NASA, what education is necessary for it, where the vacancy comes and how much salary is given.

How to get a job in NASA

To work in NASA, the most important thing is to have a strong education in science and technology. In this, first of all after 10th, you should take Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) subjects in 12th. After passing 12th, you have to do engineering or science related courses, like Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Physics, Maths or Space Science. Most of the people working in NASA have masters degree or PhD. Therefore, if you want a bigger and better post in future, then higher education becomes very important.

NASA is an American government agency, so for a permanent government job there, it is necessary to have US Citizenship. There itself . Indian students can work with NASA through internships and fellowships, under special research projects or contract jobs, and after studying at a good university in the United States and after getting a work permit there. Apart from this, many times NASA works in collaboration with private companies and international research institutes, where Indian professionals can also get opportunities.

Where are NASA vacancies?

Information about all the jobs and internships in NASA is available on the official job website of the USA government. The name of this website is USAJOBS. Here, complete information about every vacancy, qualification and application related to NASA is given. You can create your profile by visiting this website, search jobs according to your studies and skills and apply online.

How much salary do you get if you get a job in NASA?

The salary received in NASA depends on your post, education and experience. Generally, the average annual salary of employees working in NASA can be around Rs 87 lakh to Rs 1 crore in Indian Rupees. In the beginning the salary is a little less, but as the experience increases, the salary also increases rapidly.

NASA is a very large organization, which works in many fields such as science, engineering, and space exploration. There is no definite definition of “smallest posts” here, but if we talk about job levels (Job Grade), the lowest level in NASA can be considered GS-1. However, the NASA admitted in NASA starts at the GS-5 or GS-7 level, especially for those who have a bachelor’s degree.

What are GS-1 and GS-5?

GS-1: This is the lowest grade, but it is rarely used in NASA. This usually requires high school diploma, and this post can be for basic support staff like clerk or office assistant.

GS-5: It is usually considered to be the post of entry-level in NASA. Here college graduates can be appointed as technical assistant or administrative assistant.

Most positions in NASA require higher education and special skills, so the “smallest post” can also change based on reference. For example, the role of an intern or support staff can also be considered the lowest level.

In how many years is the promotion?

Promotion time in NASA is not fixed and it depends on many things, such as:

– Performance: The annual performance of the employee is the biggest basis of evaluation promotion.
– Grade System: GS scale usually requires at least 1 year experience for promotion in every grade. This is called “Time-in-grade” rule.
– Vacancies: Higher posts should be vacant for promotion, and the employee may have to apply for that post.
– Education and Skills: Additional degrees or special training may be required for high grade.

Generally promotion time:

-GS-5 to GS-7: Possible in 1-2 years, if the performance is good.
-GS-7 to GS-9: 2-3 years, based on experience and responsibilities.
-The grade (GS-11 and above): It can take 3-5 years or more time, especially if there is a big contribution in the mission or project.

For example, an engineer or scientist who starts at GS-7 can reach GS-11 or GS-12 in 5–10 years with good performance. Promotion in the case of astronauts takes place in different ways, as their role is mission-based, and they often start with high grades such as GS-13 or GS-14.

The smallest post in NASA is probably of GS-5 level, which is a technical or administrative assistant. The time of promotion is 1-3 years per grade, which depends on performance and opportunities.
