The National Citizen Party (NCP), a political party formed by the leaders of the July Movement in Bangladesh, has joined hands with the Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami for the general elections in the country to be held in February 2026 next year. This alliance was announced by Jamaat Aamir Shafiqur Rehman on Sunday (December 28, 2025).

According to the Dhaka Tribune report, Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman said that NCP and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have joined the currently eight-party alliance, after which this alliance has now become 10 parties. He said that he has spoken to NCP convenor Naheed Islam some time ago and the students’ party will make a formal announcement by Sunday (December 28, 2025) night.

Dissatisfaction within NCP over Jamaat’s alliance decision

However, dissatisfaction has also come to light within the NCP regarding the decision of alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. Many leaders of the party led by Nahid Islam have started submitting their resignations in protest against this decision. According to the report, 30 leaders of the NCP Central Committee had written a letter to Nahid Islam on Saturday (December 27, 2025) opposing any electoral agreement with the Jamaat.

Many party leaders resigned in a week

The Daily Star in its report on Sunday (December 28, 2025) said that more than 170 leaders of the NCP Central Committee have supported the alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. At the same time, just before the announcement by Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rehman, NCP joint convenor Tajnuwa Jabeen resigned from her post on Sunday afternoon (December 28, 2025).

According to the report, in the Facebook post, Jabeen expressed deep disappointment over the party’s policy-making process and its efforts for alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. Earlier on Thursday (December 25, 2025), Mir Arshadul Haq, the main leader of the anti-Jamaat faction within the NCP, had also resigned. He was the Joint Member Secretary of NCP and Chief Co-ordinator of Chittagong City Unit. In the last one week, there has been a wave of resignations within the party.

On Sunday, a new political party “National Citizen Party” held a big rally in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka and announced the establishment of a new constitution in Bangladesh and ‘Second Republic’. This party has been formed by the students who played an important role in the last year’s big government protests, due to which former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to step down. About 1000 supporters participated in this rally held at the historic martyr tower of Dhaka.

Party leader Nahid Islam said, “Exactly a year ago we had resolved to free the country from dictatorship, and today we have united to lay the foundation of a new Bangladesh.” He declared a 24-citizen agenda and said to change the 1972 constitution to a new constitution. He said that the new constitution will show the aspirations of the youth of the country.

Demand for new constitution, but details are not yet clear
However, no concrete information has been shared about this proposed constitution yet. The party says that this document will reflect a “new generation dreams” and will be prepared with public participation.

On the same day, the student unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) also held a huge rally in Dhaka. Tariq Rahman, Executive Chairman of BNP and exile in London, addressed the workers through virtual medium and called upon the youth to play an active role in the upcoming elections.

Hasina’s farewell increased stir before first anniversary
Both these rallies have taken place when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the first anniversary of leaving the country on 5 August. Hasina moved to India after mass protests, violence and hundreds of deaths in 2024. On 8 August 2024, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammad Yunus.

However, the interim government is also facing criticism. Opposition parties have made allegations of failure and human rights abuses to handle law and order. Sheikh Hasina’s party ‘Awami League’ is currently banned and the political situation of the country is still uncertain.

In fact, the Jamaat -e -Islami and newly formed party NCP supported Mohammad Yunus’s decision to hold general elections in Bangladesh next year, but on Friday (June 13), there was an initial consensus between Younus and BNP to hold elections in February. After this, on Saturday (June 14), Jamaat -e -Islami and NCP accused Mohammad Yunus of biased.

Mohammad Yunus and BNP’s exiled acting chairman Tariq Rahman met in London on Friday (June 13, 2025). During this meeting, Younus told Rahman that if all the preparations are completed, then elections can be held in Bangladesh a week before the start of Ramadan of 2026 next year.

The BNP -led coalition includes about 50 parties, who demanded the government to hold general elections in December this year. There itself. On the other hand, Jamaat -e -Islami and NCP supported the decision to hold general elections in April.
