In view of this, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has requested the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to increase network connectivity on the highway. NHAI has identified 424 such places spread over 1750 kilometers on the highways across the country, where there is problem in mobile network.

NHAI said in its statement that it has sought help from DoT and NHAI by identifying areas lacking mobile network. All information including location has been provided to them and a demand has been made to order the telecom service providers to provide networks on national highways, especially on greenfield and remote sections. The Highway Authority has described this matter as being of strategic importance and public safety and has hoped for its resolution soon. NHAI says that national highways pass through rural and remote areas and lack of reliable coverage can delay emergency response and many other services are also affected.

Talks are also going on regarding safety alert

NHAI wants that as soon as people enter any accident prone area on the highway, a safety alert should be sent to their mobile through SMS or flash alert. He has also sought help from TRAI regarding this. NHAI said that people will get this message even before they reach that area, so that they can be careful while driving. The authority has also submitted the complete list of such locations to TRAI.

Rajasthan High Court has adopted a strict stance regarding the liquor vends running on the national and state highways of the state. The bench of Justice Dr. Pushpendra Singh Bhati and Justice Sanjit Purohit has given strict instructions that all the liquor vends within 500 meters of the highway should be removed. The court has given two months time to the state government to remove or relocate these 1102 liquor shops.

The state government had argued in the court that these 1102 shops located on the highway fall in urban or municipal areas, from which the government gets a revenue of about Rs 2221.78 crore. But the High Court rejected this argument outright. The court said that the orders of the Supreme Court cannot be flouted in the name of urban limits. Making a scathing comment, the court said that the government has misused the classification of ‘municipal area’ and made the highway a ‘liquor-friendly corridor’, which is not acceptable.

HC expressed concern regarding road accidents

In its order, the court expressed deep concern over the increasing road accidents in the state. The court mentioned the horrific accidents that took place in Harmada (Jaipur) and Phalodi, in which 28 people lost their lives in just two days. The court said that drunk driving and over-speeding are the main reasons for these accidents. Statistics show that in 2025, there will be an increase of about 8% in ‘drunk and drive’ cases.

• Mandatory radius of 500 meters: No liquor shop will operate within a radius of 500 meters of the National and State Highway, even if it is in the municipal area.
• 1102 shops will shift: The government admitted that there are 1102 such shops on the highway. These will have to be compulsorily removed within 2 months.
• Advertisement also banned: There will be a complete ban on liquor advertisements, hoardings and sign boards visible from the highway. If found so, strict action will be taken.
• Life is bigger than revenue: The court said that the right to life is fundamental under Article 21 of the Constitution. People’s safety cannot be put at stake just to earn revenue.

When is the report to be submitted?

The compliance report of the case will have to be presented to the Excise Commissioner by 26 January 2026 for the next hearing.

National highways maintenance: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday that the government has approved a short -term maintenance contract (STMC) in the current financial year (FY 25) for the maintenance of the National Highway (NH) network in the current financial year (FY 25). It will cost Rs 2,842 crore. Performance based maintenance (PBMC) works have also been approved in 6,118 km length road. Its cost is Rs 6,757 crore.

Mechanism for Maintenance of National Highway

In a written statement in the Lok Sabha, the Union Minister said that the government has preferred the maintenance of the current National Highway Network and has prepared a mechanism to ensure the maintenance and repair of all NH sections through a maintenance agency. At present, 1,310 national highway projects in length are under construction at a cost of Rs 8.11 lakh crore in the country at a cost of Rs 8.11 lakh crore.

The contract period for STMC tasks usually occurs between 1-2 years. The contract of PBMC work is for about 5-7 years. The government is encouraging new technology and methods to keep national highways durable for a long time and reduce the need for maintenance.

The Union Minister said that the government assesses the road situation before the start of work and the certificate of completion to be completed before the certificate issue. Evaluation is done at regular intervals of six months of completion of the work to ensure that the quality of roads is fine.

Work on advanced traffic management system also started

Apart from this, the government has also started work on the installation of the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) on four lanes and long national highways.
