The Central Government’s National Postgraduate Scholarship (NSPG) scheme has brought great relief for students from economically weaker sections who wish to pursue higher education. Under this scheme, financial assistance of Rs 15,000 is provided every month to eligible students during their Post Graduation (PG) studies.

The objective of this initiative of the government is to encourage meritorious students to continue higher education by providing them financial assistance. Many times, due to financial constraints, students are forced to leave postgraduate level studies midway. This scheme can prove to be very beneficial for such students.

How much scholarship will you get?

Under the National Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme, scholarship at the rate of Rs 15,000 per month is given to the selected students. This amount is provided for 10 months in a year. Students can avail the benefits of this scheme for a maximum of two years during the period of their studies. In this way, eligible students can get a total financial assistance of up to Rs 3 lakh in two years, which reduces the cost of their education to a great extent.

Who can apply?

The benefit of this scholarship scheme will be available only to those students who are taking admission in any postgraduate course for the first time. It is necessary for the candidate to be enrolled in a full-time PG course in a recognized institute or university. Apart from this, the age of the applicant should be less than 30 years at the time of application. The government has also set a limit on family income to extend the benefits of the scheme to needy students.

What is the income limit?

The annual income of the family of the student applying under the scheme should not exceed Rs 6 lakh. Eligibility will be checked on the basis of income certificate.

How will the selection be done?

Selection in National Post Graduate Scholarship Scheme will be done on the basis of All India Merit. That is, the merit list will be prepared on the basis of academic performance and prescribed standards of the students applying from across the country. Eligible candidates will be selected according to this merit list. Therefore, students with better academic records have higher chances of selection.

Students will have to apply online for this scheme. Applications are accepted through the National Scholarship Portal. Candidates will have to complete the e-KYC process during application. Along with this, students will have to upload mark sheets, admit card, bank account information and other necessary documents from class 9th to highest qualification.

Under these schemes, students are given financial assistance every month or annually, which makes it easier to bear the expenses of studies.

Special scheme for meritorious students

One of the most popular schemes of UGC is National Scholarship for Post Graduate Studies (NSPGS). This scholarship is for students who have completed their studies with good marks and are now pursuing their first Masters course.

Under this scheme, financial assistance of Rs 15 thousand is given to the selected students every month. This assistance is available for two years. Every year thousands of students are given the benefit of this scheme, so that they can complete their studies without financial worries.

University toppers also get benefits

UGC has also made a special scheme for those students who achieve top rank in their college or university. Under the Post Graduate Scholarship for University Rank Holders (URH), financial assistance is provided to students securing first and second positions in graduation.

Under this scheme, students get an assistance amount of Rs 3,100 every month. This amount is given for two years. Its objective is to encourage talented students to pursue further studies.

Special assistance for SC and ST students

UGC has started a separate scheme to promote students from socially backward classes in higher education. Under the Professional Post Graduate Course Scholarship for SC/ST students, financial assistance is provided to students pursuing engineering, management, pharmacy and other professional courses.

Students studying in courses like ME and MTech get assistance of up to Rs 7,800 every month. Whereas students of other professional courses are given Rs 4,500 per month.

Special scholarship for single girl child

To promote the education of daughters, UGC has started Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship. This scheme is for those girl students who are the only children of their parents and are pursuing post graduation.

Under this scheme, financial assistance of Rs 36,200 is given to girl students every year. This assistance is available for two years. The objective of this scholarship is to encourage girls for higher education.

Who can apply?

Eligibility may vary for different scholarship schemes, but in general the applicant must be an Indian citizen. The student should be enrolled in a regular post graduation course in a recognized university or institute. In some schemes, conditions of age limit and minimum marks have also been kept.

How to apply?

First of all one time registration (OTR) has to be completed. After this you will have to login and select the scholarship scheme of UGC. Along with filling the required information in the application form, necessary documents will have to be uploaded. After submitting the application, students can also check their application status on the portal.
