NTA Financial Report: The National Testing Agency, which conducts major examinations in the country like NEET, JEE Main, CEUT and UGC NET, is once again in the news. Recently, the Standing Committee of Parliament, while presenting the figures related to the income and expenditure of NTA, stressed on working towards further strengthening the examination system. The committee has also raised the question that when the agency has surplus funds worth crores of rupees, then why work is not being done rapidly towards making the examination system more secure and effective. In such a situation, let us now tell you how much NTA earns every year by collecting exam fees from students and how much profit NTA makes.

What came out in the report of the parliamentary committee?

According to the report of the parliamentary committee, NTA earned a total income of Rs 3512.98 crore through different examinations in the last 6 years. During the same period, Rs 3064.77 crore was spent on examination organization and other arrangements. After deducting the expenses, the agency was left with a surplus of about Rs 448 crore, which on an average comes to about Rs 74.5 crore every year. The Standing Committee of Parliament said in its report that the surplus funds available with NTA should be used to further strengthen the examination system. The committee suggested that the agency improve its technical infrastructure. Strengthen monitoring mechanisms and establish more effective controls over vendors involved in the examination process.

From which examinations does NTA earn?

NTA conducts many major entrance and eligibility examinations of the country. These include examinations like NEET UG, JEE Main, CUET UG, CUET PG, UGC NET, CMAT, GPAT, ICARA CSIR-UGC NET and NCHM JEE. Every year lakhs of students apply for all these examinations and deposit the prescribed examination fees. This fee is considered to be the biggest source of income of the agency.

Also read-Job opportunity for 12th pass youth, recruitment in Rajasthan Small Industries Corporation

The largest share of NTA comes from NEET exam

NTA earns the most from NEET UG exam, which is among the biggest exams of NTA. About 22.79 lakh candidates had applied for this examination in 2026. General category candidates are charged Rs 1700, OBC and EWS category candidates are charged Rs 1600 and SC, ST and PWD category candidates are charged Rs 1,000. Considering the number of candidates, it is estimated that income of hundreds of crores of rupees will be generated from NEET alone.

Apart from this, a large number of students also appear in examinations like JEE Main and CUET, due to which the agency earns a good income every year. Although the income of NTA has reached thousands of crores of rupees, the cost of conducting the examination is also considered huge. The agency itself has to spend a huge amount for booking of examination centres, security arrangements, biometric attendance system, CCTV surveillance, software services, printing and distribution of question papers, technical management and payment of examination personnel and experts. Because of this, a large part of the total income of NTA is also spent in conducting the examination and related arrangements.

The National Testing Agency has issued a strict statement on the rumors of paper leak spreading rapidly on social media regarding NEET re-exam. NTA has made it clear that no paper has been leaked and all the claims going on on Telegram and other social media platforms are completely fake and based on fraud. The agency has appealed to the students not to trust any unknown source or channel and only trust the official information.

NTA Director General Abhishek Singh said that no incident of leak or question paper theft related to NEET re-exam has come to light. He said that some anti-social elements are trying to mislead the students and extort money by spreading wrong information. The agency has clarified that the examination system is completely secure and no paper leak has been confirmed. Students have been advised to trust only the official website and verified sources.

Big scam spreading on Telegram
According to officials, some thugs are targeting students by creating fake channels on Telegram. These people claim that they have the NEET re-exam paper and demand anything from Rs 14,000 to lakhs in return. These scammers mislead students by showing fake screenshots, edited chats and old messages. Actually, there is a facility to edit messages on Telegram, through which any person can change any conversation to make it look like the original. After transferring money, it is almost impossible to get it back.

Also read – After the release of NEET UG re-exam admit card, students should pay special attention to these things, read important instructions before the exam.

IIT Madras experts also warned
Experts of IIT Madras have also warned about such cyber scams. They say that the “proofs” shown on social media are sometimes completely edited and accepting them as truth can be harmful for the students. Experts said that any content on digital platforms can be easily changed, hence one should not trust any claim without checking. NTA has given a strict warning to all NEET candidates to stay away from any unknown Telegram or WhatsApp group.

Every year crores of students in India dream of becoming doctors, engineers or studying in big universities of the country. The path to turning these dreams into reality passes through examinations like JEE, NEET and CUET. The responsibility of conducting all these major examinations rests with one organization, whose name is National Testing Agency (NTA). In the last few years, NTA has been in the news for many reasons. In such a situation, it is important to know what this institution is and what is its role in the education system of the country.

What is NTA and how did it start?

National Testing Agency i.e. NTA was established by the Central Government in the year 2017. Its objective was to conduct the country’s major entrance examinations under a professional and transparent system. Earlier, different institutions used to conduct different examinations. This showed a lack of uniformity in the examination system. For this reason, it was decided to create an agency that could focus only on the conduct of examinations.

Which examinations are conducted by NTA?

Today NTA conducts many important entrance and eligibility examinations of the country. The most prominent among them are:

JEE Main

NEET UG

CUET UG

CUET PG

UGC NET

cmat

GPAT

Not just exams, there are many other responsibilities too

Often people think that the job of NTA is only to conduct examinations, but its responsibilities are much bigger than this. It is also the responsibility of this organization to select the examination centres, handle the technical arrangements, ensure the security of the question papers, monitor the examination process and release the results. Apart from this, NTA also continuously works on new technologies to improve the examination system.

Who heads NTA?

At present the Chairperson of NTA is Pradeep Kumar Joshi. He has been the former Chairman of Union Public Service Commission i.e. UPSC and has long experience in the field of education and examination administration. The Director General of NTA is Abhishek Singh, who is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. He is responsible for the day-to-day functioning and administrative decisions of the agency.

Also read – CBSE’s new re-evaluation portal ready after IIT panel’s green signal, students will get secure system

Unique combination of academics and administration

A special thing about NTA is that both education sector experts and administrative officers work together in it. The governing body of the institution consists of academicians, while the administrative system remains in the hands of senior officials. This is why NTA is seen as a balanced model of education and administration.

Has also been associated with controversies

After the controversies regarding NEET and UGC NET in the year 2024, NTA became the subject of national debate. Many questions were raised regarding the transparency and security of the examination. After this, many steps were taken towards strengthening the examination system. However, despite these challenges, NTA is still included among the most important examination agencies of the country.

NTA Exam System: Every year lakhs of students in India appear for entrance examinations for admission to engineering, medical and other major courses. Most of the examinations conducted in the country are conducted by the National Testing Agency. But the examinations that we see today being conducted through a single organization, National Testing Agency (NTA), were not always like this. Earlier, different institutions and boards used to conduct these examinations, but after 2017, there was a major change in the examination system and a new central system was created. In such a situation, let us know who used to conduct big exams when there was no NTA and how much the exam pattern changed after 2017.

What is NTA and when was it started?

National Testing Agency (NTA) was established by the Government of India in November 2017. Its main objective was to conduct the country’s major entrance examinations under a single, transparent and modern system. Earlier, these examinations were conducted by different institutions, due to which the process sometimes became complex and uneven. To overcome this problem, NTA was created as an independent organization, which works on digital and fair examination system.

When there was no NTA, who conducted the big exams?

1. Medical Entrance Exam – Earlier there was AIPMT (All India Pre-Medical Test) for admission in MBBS and BDS. It was conducted by CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education), later it was changed to NEET. Apart from this, AIIMS Delhi used to conduct its own separate examination. Many states also had their own medical entrance examinations.

2. Engineering Entrance Exam – Earlier there used to be AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Exam) for engineering. This was also organized by CBSE. Later it was changed to JEE Main and a separate JEE Advanced exam continued to be held for IITs.

3. State level examinations – Every state used to conduct its own separate exams, like MHT CET (Maharashtra), BCECE (Bihar) and other state level engineering, medical exams.

What changed after formation of NTA?

After the formation of NTA, many major changes took place in the examination system. Now many big examinations started coming under one organization like JEE Main, NEET UG, CUET, UGC NET. NTA made almost all the examinations computer based (CBT). Also the application and result were made completely online. Apart from this, examination centers were also created in small towns and rural areas of the country so that more students could take the examination. NTA tried to reduce paper leaks and make evaluation fast and fair. Also, the same examination process should be implemented in the entire country.

How much has the exam pattern changed after 2017?

After the formation of National Testing Agency (NTA), many important changes were seen in India’s biggest engineering examination JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). Especially in the method, pattern and organizing process of the examination, there has been a lot of difference as compared to before. Before NTA came, engineering entrance exams were mainly conducted under systems like CBSE and before that AIEEE. At that time the pattern of examination was different. A total of 90 questions were asked in the examination. There were 30-30 questions from each subject Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. All questions were compulsory. Negative marking was applied on every wrong answer. The examination was mostly conducted offline (pen-paper mode).

Big change after NTA came

After the formation of NTA in 2017, JEE exam completely changed. It was made more digital and organized. Now JEE exam has become a completely online computer based test. Students have to take the examination at the computer centre. The exam is still based on three subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Maths). Every subject includes Section A and Section B. Now the examination is not conducted on a single day, it is conducted in several shifts. Apart from this, admit card, application and result became completely online.
