Navi Mumbai International Airport: Commercial flight operations started from Navi Mumbai International Airport on Thursday. This is a significant milestone for India’s civil aviation sector, which will expand air travel capacity for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Which was the first flight?

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) began operations and the first IndiGo flight from Bengaluru landed at the runway at 8 am. The airport operator said in a statement that, upon arrival, the aircraft was given the traditional ‘water cannon salute’.

This is a long-standing tradition in aviation, marking the first commercial arrival and departure of NMIA. According to the statement, after the first arrival, the first flight from the airport, IndiGo 6E882 departed for Hyderabad at 08:40 am, completing the inaugural arrival and departure process of NMIA.

On the first day, IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air and Star Air will operate domestic services, connecting this new facility to nine destinations in India. According to the statement, the airport will operate 15 flight departures on the first day. It was told that during the initial phase, this facility will operate for 12 hours (between 8 am to 8 pm), in which there will be a provision of departure of 24 flights daily for 13 destinations.

PM Modi inaugurated

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the airport on October 8 this year. The first phase of this five-phase airport has been built at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore. By the time all five phases of the airport are completed, it will serve nine crore passengers annually, and will also have a dedicated cargo terminal.

The entire project is being developed in multiple phases under a special purpose vehicle (SPV), Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL). In which Adani Group has 74 percent stake and the remaining 26 percent stake is with the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). There are plans to increase operations to 24 hours from February next year.

Adani Group: Navi Mumbai International Airport has passed the Passenger Simulation Test. Now it is completely ready for flight movement from December 25. This project has been jointly built by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO), in which AAHL has 74 percent stake and CIDCO has 26 percent stake.

AAHL’s plan for the next 5 years

A Bloomberg report has now revealed that Adani Group is planning to spend up to $15 billion to increase the capacity of its airports to 200 million passengers every year in the next five years.

AAHL preparing to launch IPO

The purpose of this expansion is to strengthen its hold in India’s rapidly growing aviation market as the company is preparing to list its airport business. Other airports that Adani Group company AAHL operates in the country include Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Guwahati, Mangaluru and Thiruvananthapuram. There is also a plan to upgrade their capacity.

India’s air passenger traffic is increasing rapidly

According to the report, about 70 percent of the expansion cost to increase the capacity of airports will be done from debt funds, while the remaining amount will come from equity. India’s air passenger traffic is expected to more than double to 300 million every year by 2030 and accordingly Adani Group wants to handle about two-thirds of the demand.

This upgradation also strengthens the company’s plan to launch the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of its airports unit. Most of the upgradation will be done in the six airports that Adani took over in 2020 during the second round of India’s airport privatization. Earlier these were operated by the Airports Authority of India.

Navi Mumbai International Airport: Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is going to start operations from 25 December 2025. Earlier on 29th and 30th November, it had successfully passed the Passenger Simulation Test milestone. The airport’s Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) team successfully completed the first full-scale integrated passenger trial on 29 and 30 November 2025.

Every process is closely monitored

In this trial which lasted for two days, hundreds of volunteers were made passengers and went through all the major procedures of the airport, which included check-in, security check, boarding and baggage reclaim. All these were closely monitored so that the smooth functioning of the systems and processes could be evaluated. Airlines like Indigo, Akasa and Air India Express also participated in the trial.

Why was this trial necessary?

Airport officials said that the purpose of this large-scale trial was to ensure that NMIA can provide uninterrupted and efficient services to passengers from the day of its inauguration. The team completed the trial as if everything was happening in reality. Apart from this, possible challenges were identified and work was also done on their solutions. With the success of the full-scale passenger trial, the airport has reached its final stage and now the curiosity about its inauguration on 25th December has increased even more.

What is the specialty of the airport?

Mumbai’s air connectivity is expected to get a boost with the operationalization of Navi Mumbai International Airport. This airport is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, security systems and passenger amenities. This airport is built in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, about 37 kilometers from South Mumbai. This green field airport is spread over 10,660 hectares. It has been built under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, in which Adani Airport Holding Limited has 74 percent stake and CIDCO has 26 percent stake.

This airport will finally reach 10 million passengers with four terms.

PPP ready on model

The project is expected to produce more than 2 lakh jobs. These jobs will be in areas like aviation, logistics, IT, hospitality and real estate. Also, along with fulfilling the increasing air traffic demands of western India and Mumbai metropolitan regions, India’s global connectivity will be strengthened.
