Press censorship, arrests, protests and the biggest test of democracy… Now class 9 students will be able to read these events in books. NCERT has included Emergency in its new social science book. NCERT has tried to introduce students to an important period of Indian democracy.

In the new book ‘Understanding Society: India and Beyond’, the Emergency of 1975-77 has been described as one of the biggest challenges faced by Indian democracy. Now the students of class nine will not only understand the history of Emergency, but will also be able to read how that period had an impact on democratic institutions, civil rights and the politics of the country.

According to reports, this book describes how in the early 1970s the country was facing unemployment, inflation and increasing dissatisfaction with the governance system. Protests and political movements were intensifying in many states. In June 1975, national emergency was declared in the country citing ‘internal disturbance’.

Restrictions were in place for 21 months

During the Emergency, restrictions were imposed on many constitutional freedoms for about 21 months. Press censorship was imposed, opposition leaders and activists were detained, and civil rights were affected.

Jaiprakash Narayan’s role

The role of Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan has also been prominently included in the new book. It is told that he strengthened the demand for democratic reforms by organizing students, youth and common citizens. The movements in Bihar and Gujarat have also been mentioned. The book also tells that the general elections held after the end of the Emergency in 1977 proved the strength of Indian democracy. Voters expressed their opinions through voting and paved the way for political change.

Leave of these chapters

However, new chapters related to emergency and democracy have been added in the new book. While making major changes in the syllabus, many old chapters have also been removed. These include some major chapters of history – such as ‘French Revolution’, ‘Socialism in Europe and the Russian Revolution’, ‘Nazism and the Rise of Hitler’, ‘Forest Society and Colonialism’ and ‘Pastoralism in the Modern World’.

What did the Education Minister say?

At the same time, on this decision of NCERT, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said that NCERT has done the right thing. The coming generations should know and understand things like emergency so that such a situation does not happen again. NCERT has done good work.

NCERT’s new book of Social Sciences of Class 8 has given rise to a new debate. The book uses some sharp words about the Delhi Sultanate and the rulers associated with the Mughal period, about which differences are being deepened between historians and education experts.

In the new book, Babur is described as “cruel winner”, Akbar as “a mixture of tolerance and cruelty” and Aurangzeb as “Temple and Gurudwara -breaking ruler”. This language is considered more straightforward and critical than earlier books. Many people are worrying that with such things, the thinking of children can go in one -sided direction.

A special comment has also been added to Page 20 in the book, which is titled – “A Note on History’s Darker Period” i.e. “Darkness of History”. It states that “no person or community of today should be blamed for the events of the past.” The purpose of this is to give the message that history should be seen from a balanced perspective, so that students do not have a feeling of hatred or discrimination towards anyone.

What did NCERT say?

NCERT has clarified its side on the questions raised about the book. The institution says that this book has been prepared according to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Fund (NCF-SE) 2023. Its purpose is not just to give information, but to give students the ability to think, understand and analyze.

Class 8 is considered to be the final stage of the middle school. In such a situation, it is important to teach students how society, politics, history and geography are related to each other. In the book, the events from the 13th century to the 19th century have been kept from the point of view that students can understand what effect the past had on today’s India.

Simple language, deep understanding

NCERT also says that the facts in the book are explained with simple language and examples. The objective is that children should not be limited to just rote, but understand the depth of every subject and develop the habit of raising questions themselves. The things mentioned in the book are based on reliable and authentic sources.
