NCERT has released a new textbook of English for class 9. Many important changes have been made in this book which will be implemented from the new academic session 2026-27. The biggest change is that now instead of two books of English, only one book will be taught and the number of lessons has also been reduced significantly as compared to earlier. In the new book, the works of Indian writers have been given more importance than before, so that students can become better acquainted with the literature and thoughts of their country. Along with this, the syllabus burden has also been reduced, so that both school bags and study pressure of the students can be reduced.

New English book named Kaveri came out

NCERT has named the new English book of class 8 as Kaveri. This book will replace the two English books already being taught, Beehive and Moments. The new book has been prepared on the basis of National Education Policy 2020 and National School Education Curriculum Framework. The book begins with a story taken from Rajya Sabha MP and author Sudha Murthy’s book How I Taught My Grandmother to Read and Other Stories, published in 2004. In this story he has shared his childhood memories and the experience of teaching his grandmother to read. According to officials, earlier two English books were taught for Class 9, which included a total of 29 lessons. Of these, 15 texts were by foreign authors. Now in the new system the number of books has been reduced to one and the total number of lessons has also been reduced from 29 to 16. In the new book, almost equal space has been given to the works of Indian and foreign writers, but the presence of Indian writers is more visible than before.

The works of Indian writers got prominent place

The works of many prominent Indian writers have been included in the new book. These include names like Tamil poet Subramaniam Bharati, Rajya Sabha MP and writer Sudha Murthy, Naga writer Temsula Aao, Nobel Prize winning poet Rabindranath Tagore and Assamese novelist Mitra Phukan. Through these works, students will get an opportunity to read about different aspects related to Indian society, culture and life. Apart from this, elements related to Indian knowledge system have also been included in the book.

Works of foreign writers also included

The works of six foreign writers have also been included in the new book. These include the works of American poet David Roth, English poet Charles Swank, American children’s writer Brianna T. Perkins, poet Robert Langley, writer Maya Anthony and Singapore-based writer Irene Chua. Apart from this, famous writer O. Henry’s famous story The Last Leaf has also been given a place in the new book.

The year 2025 is now in its final stages and the new academic session 2026 is going to start soon. In such a situation, it becomes very important for crores of school students, parents and teachers across the country to know what major changes NCERT has made in the school books and syllabus this year. In fact, after the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP 2020), India’s education system is changing rapidly. Now education will not be limited to books only, rather emphasis is being laid on giving children education related to practical knowledge, development, local culture, history and employment.

In this direction, NCERT has taken many important decisions in the year 2025. The main objective of NCERT is that students should not just study by rote, but should learn to think, understand and learn things that are useful in life. For this reason, the syllabus has been simplified, many old chapters have been removed and many new, interesting and useful topics have been added. So let us know what major changes NCERT made in the syllabus in the year 2025.

What major changes did NCERT make in the syllabus in the year 2025?

NCERT has made necessary changes in the history books starting from the year 2025. In this, many chapters related to Delhi Sultanate and Mughal period have either been removed or have been shortened and given a new form. Now more emphasis is being given in history books. Like on the history of ancient India, on the contribution of tribal and tribal communities, on Indian scientists and their works, on Indian culture and civilization. To explain the history better, a new part has been added, which has been called the dark period of history. Also, new books of classes 4, 5, 7 and 8 have been released from the academic session 2025–26. In these books, the language has been made simpler and more interesting than before, new and modern content has been added in place of old content and the names of many books have also been changed.

Emphasis on skill based studies

Under the new education policy, skill-based i.e. vocational education is now being started from class 6. This means that students will not just read books, they will also learn to work, make projects, learn skills, studies will be linked to employment and life. Its objective is to increase confidence in students, inculcate the habit of working and prepare them for the future. Along with this, to promote the thinking of Vocal for Local and Self-reliant India, NCERT has added Swadeshi module in the books. NCERT has launched two special modules on Operation Sindoor for students of classes 3 to 12. To bridge the gap between the new and old syllabus, NCERT has started bridge courses and NCERT has completely updated the books of classes 4, 5, 7 and 8.
