After the technical glitch in flight operations in Delhi, now a similar problem has come to light in Nepal. All incoming and outgoing flights have been stopped after a technical fault in the runway lights at Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport. Airport officials said that flight operations will remain closed until the problem is resolved.

Both domestic and international flights affected
According to officials, both domestic and international flights have been stopped at Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport due to a technical problem with the runway lights. Keeping security in mind, all the planes have been grounded.

Technical team deployed on site
Technical teams have been deployed at the airport to investigate and resolve the problem. Officials said efforts are on to restore normal flight operations as soon as possible. Airport spokesperson Renji Sherpa told ANI that there was a problem with the runway’s airfield lighting system. He said, at least five flights are on hold at present. All domestic and international arriving and departing flights are facing delays. The problem was discovered at 5:30 pm (local time).

Nepal’s largest airport affected
Tribhuvan International Airport is the main aviation hub of Nepal and most of the country’s air traffic operates from here. Due to malfunction in runway lighting, the flight system of the entire country has been affected.

Flights were disrupted in India also a day earlier
This incident has come to light a day after a major technical glitch disrupted flight operations at India’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi on Friday, affecting air traffic across the country.

Operation impaired due to AMSS system failure
Airport officials said that the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), a vital system related to the flight planning process of air traffic control, had failed. However, now this problem has been completely rectified and flights became normal on Saturday.

China developed pokhara airport: There has been a big disclosure about the international airport built by spending millions of dollars in Nepal’s second largest city Pokhara. A government investigation has revealed that in this project, the Chinese government company used inferior equipment and did not work according to the set standards.

Investigation has also revealed that the Chinese company bribed some Nepal officials and MPs for the approval of the project. Not only this, the company also took approval for some such works which it never did. The Parliamentary Committee on Pokhara Airport released a 36 -page report on Thursday (April 17), in which all these revelations have been made.

Nepal’s inquiry committee made a big disclosure

According to a New York Times report, the Nepal’s inquiry committee has revealed that Chinese government company CAMC Engineering used poor goods to build Pokhara Airport and did not work properly. Earlier in the year 2023, the New York Times said in its report that this Chinese company had deliberately increased the cost of the project and weakened Nepal’s efforts. After this, the Nepal government started an investigation into this project by forming a team of 11 people.

Nepal expected this

Nepal hoped that the new international airport built in Pokhara would increase tourism in the country and the number of foreign travelers would also be more, but so far nothing like this has happened. Right now only one international flight is going on for Pokhara. The Nepali media report also stated that China has now increased the interest rate of the loan given to build the airport. Due to this, the burden of debt on Nepal has increased. It is believed that China is implicating Nepal in a debt trap. Now Nepal’s KP Sharma Oli government has formally demanded from China that the loan of $ 21.6 million at the airport should be waived and it should be converted into a grant.

This thing revealed in the report

The report stated that Nepal officials waived a tax of $ 1.6 million (about 16 million dollars) to the Chinese company CAMC, while in the agreement (contract) it was clearly written that the company would have to pay customs and VAT (price -touched tax) on the equipment brought from China. In the contract, it was also decided that there would be two runways for takeoff and landing at Pokhara Airport, but the report said that only one runway is being used there. The second runway has been closed due to security reasons.

Investigating officer Rajendra Lingden said this

Rajendra Lingden, who is investigating the Pokhara airport scam, has said that this is a great corruption. He demanded that the officers and leaders involved in it should be punished. The Parliamentary Committee fears that the necessary documents related to the airport may be destroyed, so the committee has recommended to suspend the top officers of the aviation department. It also includes the name of the current head of the department (Director General).
