A commission appointed to probe the excessive use of force during the Gen-Z agitation of September 8-9 in Nepal will summon ousted Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli for an explanation. Officials gave this information on Thursday (January 1, 2025).

At least 19 youth were killed in police firing during a protest against the Oli government in Kathmandu on September 8. 77 people lost their lives in the unrest that lasted for two days across the country. Commission chief Gauri Bahadur Karki told reporters on Thursday that after the completion of the process of recording the statement of the then Home Minister Ramesh Writer, preparations are underway to seek clarification from CPN-UML president and former Prime Minister Oli.

Bahadur Karki said the commission is working as per the plan to submit its final report within the extended deadline of January 21. The three-member inquiry commission was constituted through a Cabinet decision on September 21. However, Oli has raised questions on the validity and impartiality of the commission and said that he will not appear before it.

The Commission has also lifted the travel ban imposed on the Nepali Congress leader and writer. He was banned from leaving Kathmandu Valley and going abroad. The author had said before the commission on Monday that he takes full moral responsibility for the deaths and other losses on September 8. However, he claimed that the vandalism and arson that took place across the country on September 9 was not spontaneous, but the result of a ‘planned conspiracy against democracy and the nation’.

About 50 years ago, when Sushila Karki completed his postgraduate studies in political science from Banaras Hindu University, she might not have thought that she would set a record in Nepal politics. Karki was born on 7 June 1952 in Shankarpur-3 of Viratnagar, Eastern Nepal, which is near the Indian border. He completed a graduate degree from Mahendra Morang Campus-Tribhuvan University, Nepal in 1971 and a postgraduate degree in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1975. He then obtained a law degree from Tribhuvan University in 1978.

Karki spent 32 years in the judicial profession and became a symbol of the progress of women in the field of judiciary. He started his advocacy in Viratnagar in 1979, where his strong academic background shaped his legal career.

Permanent Judge’s post held in the year 2010

Meanwhile, in 1985, he was also appointed as an assistant teacher at Mahendra Multiple Campus, Dharan. Karki became a senior advocate in 2007 and in 2009 she was appointed ad hoc judge in the Supreme Court. She became a permanent judge on 18 November 2010.

Karki is the eldest of the seven children of her parents and grew up in an ordinary farmer family in Viratnagar. He is married to former popular Nepali Congress leader Durga Prasad Subedi. Both met while studying in BHU.
