Sushila Karki: Former Nepal Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as an interim Prime Minister on Friday. President Ramchandra Paudel administered him the oath of office and secrecy at a special ceremony held at Sheetal Niwas. Vice President Ramsahay Yadav, Chief Justice Prakash Singh Rawat, government officials, army and security chiefs as well as members of the diplomatic community were present during this period.

Heads of both houses of Parliament did not attend the swearing -in ceremony of Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki. Despite being sent from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire and the President of the Rashtriya Sabha Narayan Dahal boycotted the ceremony. Ghimire is an MP from CPN UML (Oli’s party), while Dahal CPN comes from the Maoist Center (Prachanda’s party). Both leaders are opposing the decision to dissolve Parliament. After taking oath, President Ramchandra Paudel told Karki, “Now save the country, be successful.” Karki did not respond to this and went ahead by saying thanks only.

‘The purpose of saving the constitution and maintaining national unity’
President Paudel appointed Karki as Prime Minister using constitutional rights. At the same time, the interim government was entrusted with the responsibility of conducting general elections within six months. The move was taken after the recent Gen Z movement and the decision of fracturing Parliament. Although there was a proposal to form a three -member cabinet, the ministerial posts could not be agreed. In such a situation, Sushila Karki will temporarily take charge of all the ministries.

Who was in the race besides Sushila Karki?
Long meetings were held before the 73 -year -old Karki had agreed on the name. Gen Z faction, President and Army Chief were also involved in these meetings. Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah and former head of Nepal Electricity Authority, Kurtman Ghising were also included in the race for the interim Prime Minister. But Balen Shah himself denied this post.

Why did Gen Z agree in Karki’s name
Sushila Karki has been Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice. During his tenure, he took a tough stance against corruption, making them popular among the youth. This is the reason that angry with the old system, Gen Z agitators accepted him as an interim Prime Minister.

Will Gen Z representative join the government?
At present, according to reports, representatives of GEN Z agitators will not directly join the government. However, they will monitor the interim government and keep an eye on the fact that decisions should be taken on the future of the youth.

Gen-Z protesters’ terms

General elections in 6 to 12 months : The first demand of the agitators was that general elections should be held in the country as soon as possible, so that the public can choose the government of their choice. Karki has accepted it.

Parliament dissolved: Nepal’s Parliament was dissolved under pressure from GEN-Z protesters and now the command of power is in the hands of Sushila Karki.

Construction of Civil-Sensies Government: The agitators had proposed that both citizens and the army should be represented in the government. Karki has also accepted this demand.

Reinnces on corruption: The protesters said that the movement was not only against social media ban, but corruption is the main reason. He proposed to form a powerful judicial commission to investigate the property of old parties and leaders.

Independent investigation into violence: A fair and independent investigation of the violence during the movement was also demanded. Sushila Karki has agreed to this so that the victims can get justice.

Before the official Instagram account of the Royal Family of Nepal, King Gyanendra B. B. Shah has expressed his condolences on the recent violence. He said that whatever happened is very sad and painful. He expressed deep condolences to the families of those who died in this incident.

Gyanendra Shah said in clear terms that strict action should be taken against those who are responsible for this condemnable incident and no convict should be spared against them. In his message, he also recalled the courage and contribution of Jean ji (the person martyred during the performance). He said that the courage with which Jean ji raised his voice against injustice and corruption is commendable and the country should always respect for his efforts.

Former king gave this message to the youth

The former king inspired the youth and said, “O Veer, do not talk about retreat. If you want to get mother (Janani), then Nepal will have to be found.” This message of him is being considered a big statement in view of the current situation in Nepal and the increasing dissatisfaction among the public. The root of violence in Nepal is corruption and deteriorating economy.

Why did people get angry in Nepal?

The situation in Nepal became more tense when the government banned 26 social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube. Angry with this decision, the youth started the movement in the name of Gen-Z revolution from 8 September. Gradually, this protest became so fast that the situation went out of the government’s control. In the end, Prime Minister KP Oli Sharma resigned and had to leave the country and flee.

Consent in the name of Sushila Karki

In Nepal’s politics, the stir has intensified about the new government. The name of Sushila Karki has been agreed and its information has been given to the speaker of Parliament. Earlier, President Ramchandra Paudel had met party leaders to create political consent. He spoke to the Maoist Center President Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ after consulting legal experts. Apart from this, he also spoke on the phone to Congress Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka, General Secretary Gagan Thapa and Vishwaprakash Sharma.

Whatever happened in Nepal recently, he caught the attention of the entire South Asia. The government order to ban social media websites provoked the anger of the youth (GEN-Z). Gen-Z calls them, who use social media platforms to raise their voice on digital platforms and connect with the global world. Such people were considering the decision of the government as an attack on freedom of expression. The effect of the movement was that the protesters burnt the Parliament House. Due to this, the government is expected to lose crores. It was engaged in US $ 43.5 million to make it. Apart from this, there are many such projects, which are running in Nepal from other countries. Those projects will also see the impact of the performance. The disadvantage of GEN-Z’s violent performance can directly be seen on Nepal’s economy.

The effect of protests in Nepal was that the government withdrew the decision to ban social media, but by then it was late. This was not just a technical issue. It was a dissatisfaction in the mind for decades, which suddenly burst. People were saying that social media ban is just an excuse, the real reason is the long -running corruption, political instability and unemployment. The situation worsened when the security forces tried to scare the protesters. At least 22 people died in the violence. After this, Prime Minister KP Oli had to resign from his post.

The roots of instability in Nepal’s politics
The political history of Nepal has been full of upheaval. In 1951, when the country moved towards democracy from the monarchy, it was expected that stability would come, but after that the monarchy captured power several times and weakened democratic institutions. The Maoist rebellion in the 1990s completely changed Nepal’s politics. The monarchy ended in 2006 and the Maoists emerged as the biggest political force in 2008, but they also failed to give a permanent and strong rule. Since 2008, no party in Nepal could achieve majority. In the current Parliament, the outgoing Prime Minister Oli’s party also had only 78 seats out of 285. This scattered politics made governance weak and gave an opportunity to deepen corruption.

Poverty decreased, but with the help of migrants
Despite political instability, Nepal has achieved shocking success in poverty alleviation sector. In 1995, where 55 percent of the people were below the international poverty line ($ 2.15 per day), it declined to just 0.4 per cent by 2023. However, this success has come from domestic economic development, but from the earnings and remittances of migrants. Today, about 30 percent of Nepal’s GDP is dependent on the amount coming from abroad. Some member works abroad from every fourth house. That is, a large part of Nepali society today is based on the economies of other countries of the world. This is the reason why anger increased from social media ban. This was not only an attempt to stop the voice of the younger generation, but a cheaper means was also taken away to connect with family members working abroad.

Nepal’s economy depends on migrants

The World Bank divides the economy of Nepal into three stages, which is as follows:

Conflict period (1996–2006): A round of Maoist rebellion.

Conflict period (2007-2014): Attempts for political reorganization.

Repeated shocks (2015-2023): Earthquake, epidemic and political crisis.

In all these phases, Nepal’s economy has performed poorly compared to its neighboring countries. High Remittans Flow strengthened foreign currency, but this negatively affected exports. When the migrants come back, they find it difficult to reside in the domestic economy again. The result of this is that Nepal’s economy may look stable, but it is hollow from within. It is like a mine that can burst at any time and Jane Z protests are a sign of the same.
