The Nepal government has lifted the ban on social media. Information and Communication Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung said that it was decided to remove the ban from social media in the cabinet meeting held on Monday (8 September 2025). However, Minister Gurung said that the government has no regrets on the decision to ban social media. He said, “The decision to remove the ban from social media has been taken due to protests that were using it as excuses.” The Prime Minister told the cabinet that some of the banned social media platforms have given such a response, which does not respect Nepal’s national pride.

At least 21 people have died and more than 300 were injured in the protests against the ban in Nepal. Nepal’s Communications, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung announced that the government has withdrawn its decision to ban social media sites after the cabinet emergency meeting. Gurung said that the Ministry of Information has ordered the concerned agencies to start the process of resumption of social media sites according to the demands of the ‘Jane Ji’ group, which protested extensively in front of Parliament in the middle of Kathmandu.

Why did Nepal ban 26 social media sites?
Three days ago, the Nepal government had ordered a ban on 26 social media sites including Facebook and ‘X’, as she was working without any legitimate registration. The minister requested the protesting ‘Jane Ji’ group to end the protests. Eyewitnesses said that the protest on Monday became violent when some protesters entered the Parliament complex. After this, the police had to use water showers, tear gas and bullets to disperse the crowd. Meanwhile, social media sites like Facebook, X and WhatsApp have started again since Monday night.
