After banning social media apps in Nepal, a huge protest started, which has now taken violent form. The government had banned many social media apps including Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp, handing over the rules. After this, 20 people died and 300 were injured in violent protests across the country. This is not the first time a country has banned social media. Even before this, many countries have done this. Let’s take a look at the list of these countries.

China

After the riots in Shinjiang province in 2009, the Chinese government banned companies like Facebook, X and Google. The government had imposed this ban to maintain political control, prevent anti -government information from reaching people and allegedly protect its citizens from foreign influence. This ban is still going on on foreign apps and only apps of local companies can be used here.

Iran

Since 2009, social media platforms have been banned in Iran and apps like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp cannot be accessed here. This ban was imposed as a result of anti -government movements. However, this ban could not succeed completely and now people here are using social media apps through VPN.

Turkas

Turki also banned apps like Facebook, YouTube and Wikipedia in the name of action and security against terrorism. This ban imposed in 2014 had to be removed in 2016. It proved to be a temporary ban and the government later had to withdraw its decision.

Egypt

Egypt took large -scale demonstrations in 2011 and is known as Arab Spring. Many people consider it to be the first big change through social media. Due to this demonstration across the country, the government there fell. After this, social media apps were banned here.

Pakistan

In India’s neighboring country, Pakistan was banned from 2021 to 2011 on YouTube, X and Ticketops. The Government of Pakistan had banned these platforms while taking action on allegations of hurting religious sentiments and spreading obscenity. However, later the decision had to be withdrawn.

Russia

After the war with Ukraine in 2022, Russia banned several apps including Facebook and Instagram. Russia said that these apps are promoting war propaganda. Now local apps are being promoted in their place.

Nepal is currently facing the biggest and fierce mass movement of decades. Protests led by ‘Jane Z’ protesters against corruption, nepotism and social media ban have taken violent form. There is arson and sabotage in the capital Kathmandu and other cities. This movement has become especially a symbol of the anger of the youth, who had been angry with political corruption and inequalities for a long time.
The most shocking moment of this movement came when the protesters attacked Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba. In the video, he can be seen wiping blood from his face. Angry mob entered his residence and kicked him. The protesters also recorded a video of the incident and put it on social media.

PM Oli resigns
Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned amid violence and demonstrations. After banning social media, the demonstrations became even more fierce. The government had banned 26 unregistered platforms, including Facebook, YouTube and X. Despite the removal of the ban, the movement is not taking the name of stopping. With the resignation of Prime Minister Oli, Nepal’s political situation has become more unstable.

Death and injured number increased
So far 21 people have died in the ongoing demonstration in Nepal. More than 300 people are said to be injured. The situation is the worst in the capital Kathmandu, where even the minister is not safe. Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel was attacked by angry protesters. In a video, a protestor kicks them and dropped them, causing their balance to deteriorate and they collided with the wall.

Inequalities increased public anger
In a poor country like Nepal, where per capita income is only $ 1,400 per year, the luxurious property and luxury lifestyle of politicians and their children created anger in the public’s mind. The youth accused the leaders that they are having fun in the poverty of the public. As a result, the movement gradually took the form of anti-corruption public revolution.

In Nepal on Monday (September 8), the anger of Gen-Z youths against social media ban erupted. Thousands of youths took to the streets from the capital Kathmandu to many cities. This movement gradually became violent, in which 19 people died and more than 300 people were injured. Late in the night, the government lifted the ban from social media when the situation deteriorated. Let’s know 10 big updates related to violence and performance in Nepal.

1. Committee will be formed to investigate violence

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed grief over the death of the protesters and said that some anti -social elements made the peaceful movement violent. He made it clear that the government’s intention was not to close social media, but to control it under the rules. He also announced to set up an inquiry committee to report in 15 days.

2. Resignation of Home Minister, but Oli will not withdraw

Taking moral responsibility of violence, Home Minister Ramesh writer resigned from the post. At the same time, Information Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung said that Prime Minister Oli will not resign. He also said that the government will give compensation to the families of the dead and the injured will be treated free of cost.

3. Completely ban on assembly, procession or rally

On Monday evening, when the situation was out of control, the government called the army in Kathmandu. The Army took control of the Parliament House and its surrounding areas. Along with this, curfew was implemented in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Butwal and Ithari. During this time, any kind of gathering, procession or rally will be completely stopped.

4. What is the reason for protest?

The protesters say that the government is failing not only social media, but also on issues like unemployment, corruption and economic crisis. The youth accused the leaders of leaders of having ash by running “NEPO KID” trend on social media, while the general public is troubled by unemployment and inflation.

5. These countries condemned violence

The United Nations human rights unit expressed deep concern over violent incidents and demanded a fair inquiry. At the same time, countries like America, Britain, Australia, France, Japan and South Korea condemned the violence and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

6. Why was there a ban on social media?

Three days ago, the government banned 26 social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Redit and X. The reason was told that companies could not register within the stipulated time. The government claimed that this step was not taken up to the censorship, but to follow the rules, but the youth strongly opposed it considering it an attack on freedom of expression.

The youth of Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012 in Nepal, have launched a new fight against corruption and nepotism. This demonstration has become the identity of both the political consciousness and disappointment of the younger generation of Nepal. According to the Himalayan Times, protests against corruption and social media ban in New Baneshwar in Kathmandu became violent. During the clash, a generation jade protesting was injured by a bullet, however, he died during treatment at the civil hospital. Apart from this, more than 80 people have been injured.

Generation Z (youths born in 1997-2012) on Monday (8 September 2025) in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu attacked the federal parliament complex in New Baneshwar. The protesters were trying to enter the police barricades and climb the gates. The police released tear gas shells and water showers to stop them. Earlier, the protesters had resolved to remain peaceful, but the atmosphere turned violent during March towards Parliament House.

Demonstration
These protesters of Generation Z have taken to the streets against the government on two major issues. There are many reasons in this, in which two are considered very important. In this, the first is a case related to corruption and nepotism and the second is being demonstrated by the government to ban social media. These issues have given rise to anger and dissatisfaction among the youth across the country.
Movement in other cities of Nepal also
Not only Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, but also in other big cities of the country, which is as follows:

Pokhara

Butt

Viratnagar

In these places also the youth took placards and opposed the government’s decision and demanded transparency.

Conflict between police and protesters
In Baneshwar, many youths were seen climbing the police guard house before leaving tear gas from security forces. At the same time, the police continued to try to remove the protesters trying to enter the Parliament House. The administration has termed the situation as very stressful.

March from Maiti to Baneshwar
The protesters gathered at 9 am in Mandla in the capital Kathmandu and started a rally with placards and slogans. The rally lasted till Baneshwar, which is a major political center of Nepal. The organizers clearly stated that this is not only one day performance, but in the coming days, they will raise their voice.
