Who is Nazmul Islam?

Nazmul Islam was included in the Board of Directors of Bangladesh Cricket in the year 2021. Apart from cricket administration, Najumal has been active in Bangladesh politics. He joined the board in the year 2021 representing Dhaka Metropolis area. He was elected unopposed in the BCB elections. However, on Thursday i.e. January 15, 2026, he was removed from the post due to massive protest by the players and controversial statements. Apart from cricket administration, Nazmul Islam also does business in Bangladesh.

Why did Bangladeshi players strike against Nazmul?

As the director of Bangladesh Cricket Board, Nazmul Islam has been in the news in recent times for his controversial statements. After the controversy over releasing Mustafizur Rahman from IPL 2026, Nazmul started the campaign of not playing in the T20 World Cup to be held in India. The board issued a statement that there is a security threat to Bangladesh players in India, due to which all their matches should be held in Sri Lanka. However, ICC rejected this demand of BCB, after which Bangladesh Cricket Board threatened not to participate in the T20 World Cup.

Amidst this chaos, former Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal said in a statement that BCB should not take any decision under the influence of emotions and it needs to take a wise decision regarding the T20 World Cup. Nazmul Islam felt so bad about this statement of Tamim that he publicly called the former Bangladeshi cricketer an agent of India. After this statement Nazmul started protesting. Many former cricketers called Nazmul’s statement against Tamim insulting and asked him to apologize, but Nazmul remained adamant on his insistence. In such a situation, Bangladesh players again boycotted BPL, due to which BPL had to be postponed on January 15, 2026. After the players’ strike, Bangladesh Cricket Board has removed Nazmul from his post.

BCB Sent Letter To ICC For The Second Time: Bangladesh Cricket Board does not want to send its players to India for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka. For this, BCB has again emailed ICC. Earlier, an email was sent by the board regarding the safety of the players. Which was rejected by ICC. In that response, the ICC had made it clear that it did not see any problem regarding security. Now Bangladesh Cricket Board has sent a formal letter to ICC for the second time.

According to the report, after discussions between Bangladesh Cricket Board and Sports Ministry advisor Asif Nazral, a new letter has been sent to the ICC. Asif Nazral has taken a strong stance on this issue. A source close to the board told PTI, ‘The ICC wants to know about the security concerns and the BCB has explained the same in detail.’

The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to start from February 7, 2026. Along with India, Sri Lanka will also host this tournament. However, Bangladesh has to play all four of its matches in India. Three matches of which will be held in Eden Gardens, Kolkata and one match will be held in Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
