Traffic on the bridge has completely stopped due to the collapse of a slab of pillar number 133 of Vikramshila Setu, connecting Bhagalpur to Navgachia. Due to the vigilance of the district administration, no damage was caused and the bridge was sealed in the night itself. This incident is said to have happened on Monday (May 4) night at around 12:50 am.

Senior officers are alert. The bridge has been sealed from both Navgachia and Bhagalpur sides. Let us tell you that this bridge was built in the year 2001. UP Bridge Corporation had built this bridge. In just 25 years it has fallen apart like a pack of cards. The length of the bridge is approximately 4:50 kilometers. This only bridge connects Bihar with Seemanchal and North Bengal.

Police officer gave this information

A senior officer said that traffickers were present on the bridge when the incident occurred. Because of this we were able to prevent a major accident. At present the traffic is being diverted to the alternative route. He said that this is a very busy bridge. That’s why we all are very alert.

He told that teams of experts, officers and engineers have arrived here. The matter will be further investigated by the team. He said all the officers are arriving. We will keep an eye on those things from an immediate safety and traffic perspective.

What did DM say when the bridge slab fell?

DM Naval Kishore Chaudhary said that at around 12:35 in the night, a slab started sinking near Pillar 133. Due to the wisdom of our local officer and SHO, people were evacuated safely from there. As soon as people were evacuated, the slab fell into the Ganga river within 15 minutes. There was no vehicle on that slab.

The bridge has been sealed from both Bhagalpur and Navgachia sides. Traffic has been stopped. We cannot start alternative routes at night. People who want to come to Bhagalpur. They may come from Munger side. We are looking for alternative arrangements.

Executive Engineer of Road Construction Department gave this information

Road Construction Department Executive Engineer Saket Kumar Roshan said that Vikramshila bridge has collapsed. Preparations are being made for an alternative route. Further action will be taken in the matter. He told that repair work of the bridge will be done. It has been asked for its maintenance. He told that funds have not been released yet for the repair work, if the government releases it then work on it will be started.
