In the investigation conducted in Kozhikode, Nipah virus has been confirmed in a 45-year-old man. After this matter came to light, health officials took precautionary measures and started identifying the people who came in contact with that man. The patient is currently undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. In such a situation, let us now tell you how Nipah virus spreads and how dangerous it is.

The patient came in contact with 77 people

According to the report, it is a matter of relief that till now none of the 77 people who came in contact with the patient have shown any symptoms of Nipah virus. According to officials, out of 77 people, 14 are the patient’s family members, 5 are friends and colleagues and 58 are health workers. It is being told that 15 of these people have been kept in high-risk category.

What is Nipah virus?

Nipah virus is a genetic virus, that is, it spreads from animals to humans. Its main source is considered to be fruit weight i.e. fruit eating bats. This virus first appeared in Malaysia and Singapore in 1999. Apart from this, its outbreak has been seen from time to time in India, Bangladesh and some countries of South East Asia.

How does Nipah virus spread?

Nipah virus infection can spread to humans in many ways, such as by eating fruits contaminated with the saliva, urine or feces of infected bats, by drinking the juice of raw dates that have come in contact with bats, by coming in contact with infected animals, especially pigs, apart from this, this virus spreads by coming in contact with the body fluids of an infected patient such as saliva, blood or other secretions. According to experts, the risk of infection is higher in people who take care of infected patients.

Nipah Virus Bat Transmission: After the case of Nipah virus came to light in West Bengal, the concern of the whole world has increased once again. The reason is clear that this virus spreads from animals to humans and if it starts spreading from human to human, then the situation can worsen very rapidly. Usually its source is bats that eat fruits, sometimes this virus reaches the body through raw date juice or fruits contaminated by bats. The most scary thing is its mortality rate, which is said to be around 40 to 75 percent. This is the reason why health agencies go on high alert as soon as a single case of Nipah is found in any country.

Why is Nipah virus so dangerous?

The biggest reason that makes Nipah dangerous is that till now there is no sure cure or vaccine available for it. Treatment is done only on the basis of symptoms and in many cases the patient has to be kept in ICU. Dr Ashutosh Kumar Garg told TOI that even those who survive may suffer long-term neurological problems.

How does Nipah spread in the body?

Nipah virus does not show immediate effect.Dr. Bharat Kumar Surisetty explains that its incubation period is usually 4 to 14 days, but in some cases it can remain hidden for up to 45 days. During this time, the person feels absolutely fine, but the virus continues to be active inside.

two stages of the disease

According to experts, Nipah infection often appears in two stages, in which

First phase – flu-like phase

In this stage, there are complaints like high fever, headache, body ache, sore throat, vomiting and nausea. Many times people ignore it considering it to be normal flu or Covid.

Second stage – the most dangerous

From here the disease can take a fatal form. Nipah virus attacks the brain and can cause encephalitis. During this time, dizziness, excessive sleepiness, confusion, loss of consciousness, difficulty in breathing, seizures and even coma can occur within 24 to 48 hours.

How does Nipah virus spread?

From direct contact with infected bats or pigs

Drinking fruit or raw date juice contaminated by bats

Through contact with body fluids of an infected person (human to human)

In which countries have cases been found?

Cases of Nipah virus have been reported in many parts of the world, including Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines. According to reports in India, two people have died due to this in West Bengal, after which an alert has been issued in many countries of the world. Let us tell you that as soon as a case comes to light, testing, isolation and contact tracing are intensified so that the infection can be prevented from spreading.
