A big change is going to happen soon in the medical education of India. The National Medical Commission has made it clear that preparations are underway to implement the National Exit Test for medical graduates in the country. This exam will replace the existing NEET PG and will change the entire process of becoming a doctor. However, NExT will not be implemented immediately at present. In such a situation, let us tell you today how NEET will change into NExT and how the entire process of becoming a doctor will also change.

One exam from doctor to license and PG admission

Till now, NEET used to decide the path of admission to MBBS and BDS courses in medical colleges. Now according to NMC, going beyond the next examination, the process of becoming a doctor, obtaining license to practice medical practice and post graduate admission will be combined into a single examination. According to NMC, NEXT has been designed as a uniform examination so that students of all medical colleges in the country can be evaluated at the same level. This is also expected to improve the quality of medical education and qualification of doctors.

Next will not be applicable at present

According to the NMC Chairman, the next exam was planned to be implemented from August 2025, but it was postponed. According to the NMC Chairman, the examination will not be implemented immediately, but first work will be done on its preparation, structure and feedback. After the meeting with the Federation of All India Medical Associations, NMC said that the first mock tests will be conducted for the next three to four years. Through these trial exams, it will be checked how appropriate it is to implement Next. NMC will bear the entire cost of the test.

Students and doctors had expressed protest

Earlier too, students and many doctors’ organizations had lodged protests regarding the next examination. In 2019, NMC had planned to conduct NEXT in 2023 for the 2019 batch, but it was postponed indefinitely after protests by students. The student said that this examination is against the provisions of NMC Act 2019 and it will increase the pressure of studies.

NMC will replace NEET-PG

If Next is implemented then the examinations of NEET-PG, FMGE and MBBS final year exam will be abolished. Actually, if NEXT is implemented then MBBS students will have to appear for NEXT instead of final year examination. Whereas admission in postgraduate will be done only on the basis of merit obtained in the next exam. Apart from this, students doing MBBS from abroad will no longer need to appear for FMGE separately. He will also be able to join Next along with Indian students.
