As soon as the name of security system comes to the mind of most of the people in the world, the strength of the army, the stock of weapons and the preparedness of the army come to mind, but there are some countries which have been safe for years even without the army and are living peacefully. These countries have not relied on army but on diplomacy, international alliances and police force for their defence.

First of all let’s talk about Mauritius. This beautiful island nation situated in the Indian Ocean has no army. The responsibility of security here is in the hands of the police and a special paramilitary force, Special Mobile Force.

If needed, this force also takes care of the defense of the country. However, Mauritius believes in peaceful diplomacy and its geographical location also keeps it away from direct conflicts.

Another name is Iceland. This country is the second largest island in Europe and is famous all over the world for its beauty. There has been no army here since 1869, but it is not alone in terms of security. Iceland is a member of NATO, and in case of any major threat, the US, Norway and other NATO countries protect it.

Now let us come to the small but very safe country Liechtenstein. This country settled in Europe had abolished the army in 1868 because it could not afford the expenses. Since then the country adopted a peaceful attitude and trusted neighboring countries like Switzerland and Austria. Day-to-day security is handled by its police, and Switzerland provides immediate assistance when needed.

The fourth country is Costa Rica, which abolished the army forever after the terrible civil war of 1948. Costa Rica decided that the money spent on the army would be invested in education, health and development. Today in the world it is considered a symbol of peace. The security of the country is handled by the police and specific government agencies. Its foreign policy and strong international relations keep it away from any military threat.

Vatican City, the world’s smallest country, earlier had a security unit named Noble Guard, but it was disbanded in 1970. Now the security of the Vatican is mainly done by Swiss guards, while in case of great danger, Italy assumes full responsibility. This country, which believes in religion, peace and dialogue, trusts its cultural and religious identity more than military power.
