Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old post graduate student from Tripura, was stabbed to death on Friday (December 26, 2025) in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. The incident has been termed as an alleged racial attack, which has given rise to a sharp political controversy. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has also given his reaction on this incident. He has termed the murder of the Tripura student as a national disgrace.

Shashi Tharoor posted on X?

Reacting strongly to the death of a Tripura student, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor shared a post on social media platform X on Monday (December 29, 2025). He linked this crime to deep social prejudices. He said that this barbaric murder in Uttarakhand is not just a tragedy, but it is a national disgrace.

The brutal killing of Aniel Chakwa in Uttarakhand is not just a tragedy—it is a national disgrace. A young man from Tripura, a proud Indian, was racially abused, dehumanized with slurs like “Chinese” and “momo,” and ultimately murdered. This was not an isolated act of violence;… pic.twitter.com/WHmA0m7Q0L

 — Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 29, 2025

He said, ‘A young man from Tripura, who was proudly Indian, was subjected to racial abuses, inhumanely insulted with words like Chinese and Momo and finally murdered. This was not an isolated incident of violence, it is the result of ignorance, prejudice and the failure of our society to recognize and respect our own diversity.

This incident is very shameful – Shashi Tharoor

Describing this incident as a worrying trend, the Congress leader said, ‘It is shocking and extremely shameful that racism is on the rise in North India, which is often hidden behind light jokes or institutional neglect.’ He said that discrimination against the people of north-eastern states hurts the basic concept of India. The Northeast, with its rich cultures, languages and traditions, is not a distant part of Indian identity, but its core. Yet people from this area often face racial profiling, exclusion and abuse. This should stop now.

Demanding accountability beyond the courts, Tharoor said, ‘We have to demand justice for Aniel (Angel Chakma) not just in the courts, but also in the conscience of the nation. His death should not be reduced to a statistic or a total of headline moments.

PM Modi News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of a new fertilizer unit with an annual capacity of 12 lakh metric tonnes in Namrup, Assam. On this occasion, the Prime Minister described it as a historic day for Assam and the entire North-East India and said that this will give a new direction to industrial development in the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, ‘Today is a big day for Assam and the entire Northeast. The dream that Namrup and Dibrugarh had been waiting for for a long time is being fulfilled today. Today a new chapter of industrial progress is starting in this entire area.

Assam has gained new momentum of development: PM Modi

The Prime Minister said that Assam is now moving forward with a new pace of development. Assuring the people, he said, ‘Assam has reached a new pace of development. I want to tell you, what you are seeing and experiencing right now is just a beginning. We have to take Assam much further.

‘After BJP government came to power, work for farmers intensified’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that major decisions in the interest of farmers have become possible only after the coming of the BJP government. He said, ‘You think, why is the work for the farmers happening after the BJP government came to power? Namrup was the center of fertilizer production for decades. Even when the supply of fertilizers became a challenge in many parts of the country, Namrup remained a hope for the farmers.

Congress governments accused of neglect

Taking aim at the Congress governments, the Prime Minister said that with time the technology of Namrup factories became outdated, but no attention was paid to it. He said, “The technology of the old factories became obsolete with time and the Congress governments did not pay attention. The result was that many units of the Namrup plant were closed due to this reason.”

‘Double engine government is solving the problems’

Prime Minister Modi said that the current double engine government is solving the problems that arose during the Congress era. He said, ‘Today our double engine government is solving the problems created by the Congress.’

‘Factories closed during Congress era, now new plants started’

The Prime Minister said that not only in Assam, but in many states of the country, fertilizer factories were closed during the Congress rule. He said, ‘Like Assam, how many fertilizer factories were closed in other states of the country too. Our government is trying its best to improve the conditions which Congress had worsened.

‘Country towards self-sufficiency in urea production’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the present government has started many new fertilizer plants, which are directly benefiting the farmers. He said, “During the Congress era, fertilizer factories used to be closed, whereas our government has started many plants. As a result, we are taking strong steps in the direction of becoming self-reliant in the urea sector in the coming times.”

Hydroelectric Power: India’s power planning agency Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has prepared a massive transmission plan worth ₹6.4 lakh crore ($77 billion) to meet the growing electricity demand in the country. Under this plan, more than 76 GW hydroelectric capacity will be delivered to different parts of the country by 2047 from the Brahmaputra Basin.

According to the report released by CEA on Monday, the scheme covers 208 large hydro projects in 12 sub basins spread across the northeastern states. These include potential capacity of 64.9 GW and pumped storage plant capacity of 11.1 GW.

This has been said in the CEA report

The report states that the Brahmaputra River, which originates in Tibet (China) and passes through India and Bangladesh, has huge hydropower potential in India’s part. Especially in Arunachal Pradesh, which borders China, its potential is highest.

According to the CEA report, the transboundary location of this basin and its proximity to China makes water management and infrastructure planning a strategic challenge. India is worried that if China builds a big dam on the Yarlung Zangbo (the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra), it could reduce the dry season water flow to India by up to 85 percent.

80% of India’s hydro resources are in the Brahmaputra basin.

The Brahmaputra basin is spread across parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and West Bengal. According to reports, this basin holds more than 80 percent of India’s untapped hydropower potential. Only Arunachal Pradesh has a capacity of 52.2 GW.

The scheme will be implemented in two phases

According to CEA’s plan, the first phase will run till 2035, with an estimated cost of ₹1.91 lakh crore. The second phase will run till 2047, which will cost ₹4.52 lakh crore.

Projects will be handed over to companies like NHPC, NEEPCO and SJVN

In this scheme of CEA, many projects have been allotted to central public sector companies like NHPC, NEEPCO and SJVN. Some of these projects are already in the process of construction. India aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and achieve 500 GW non-fossil energy generation capacity by 2030. Also, India has set a target of net zero emissions by 2070.

Mohammed Yunus on Seven Sisters States: Mohammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, during his visit to China, called the north-east part of India separate and landlocked. However, there is now a change in the notes of Mohammad Yunus. Mohammad Yunus had earlier made this statement with the intention of earning huge investment from China, however, now Yunus is advocating the inclusion of a unified cross-border Economic Integration Plan by combining North-Eastern states called Sea Sisters States of Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and India together.

Mohammad Yunus gave this statement on Monday (May 12) after meeting Indira Rana, vice -president of Nepal’s Pratinidhi Sabha, who has currently come to attend a function organized by the Nepal Embassy in Dhaka. Yunus said during this time, “There should be an integrated economic plan for Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the northeastern states of India. Working together can benefit more than alone.”

Yunus told Bangladesh alone in the ocean

The Chief Advisor of Bangladesh traveled to Beijing, the capital of China in March this year. During this journey, he described the isolated of the Northeast of India. Apart from this, he had called Bangladesh as the only protector of the ocean and he was in the greed to get heavy investment from China. He had said, “Bangladesh can become an entry gate for this area. In this geographical location, there is immense possibilities available for China and this area can also cause the expansion of the Chinese economy.

Yunus had insisted, “You can go anywhere from Bangladesh. The ocean is in our backyard.” However, Yunus’s lyrics changed after India’s action under Operation Sindoor against Pakistan and he is presenting it as a possible corridor for the shared prosperity of the region, which is talking about shared interest and resource sharing.
