NTA Financial Report: The National Testing Agency, which conducts major examinations in the country like NEET, JEE Main, CEUT and UGC NET, is once again in the news. Recently, the Standing Committee of Parliament, while presenting the figures related to the income and expenditure of NTA, stressed on working towards further strengthening the examination system. The committee has also raised the question that when the agency has surplus funds worth crores of rupees, then why work is not being done rapidly towards making the examination system more secure and effective. In such a situation, let us now tell you how much NTA earns every year by collecting exam fees from students and how much profit NTA makes.

What came out in the report of the parliamentary committee?

According to the report of the parliamentary committee, NTA earned a total income of Rs 3512.98 crore through different examinations in the last 6 years. During the same period, Rs 3064.77 crore was spent on examination organization and other arrangements. After deducting the expenses, the agency was left with a surplus of about Rs 448 crore, which on an average comes to about Rs 74.5 crore every year. The Standing Committee of Parliament said in its report that the surplus funds available with NTA should be used to further strengthen the examination system. The committee suggested that the agency improve its technical infrastructure. Strengthen monitoring mechanisms and establish more effective controls over vendors involved in the examination process.

From which examinations does NTA earn?

NTA conducts many major entrance and eligibility examinations of the country. These include examinations like NEET UG, JEE Main, CUET UG, CUET PG, UGC NET, CMAT, GPAT, ICARA CSIR-UGC NET and NCHM JEE. Every year lakhs of students apply for all these examinations and deposit the prescribed examination fees. This fee is considered to be the biggest source of income of the agency.

The largest share of NTA comes from NEET exam

NTA earns the most from NEET UG exam, which is among the biggest exams of NTA. About 22.79 lakh candidates had applied for this examination in 2026. General category candidates are charged Rs 1700, OBC and EWS category candidates are charged Rs 1600 and SC, ST and PWD category candidates are charged Rs 1,000. Considering the number of candidates, it is estimated that income of hundreds of crores of rupees will be generated from NEET alone.

Apart from this, a large number of students also appear in examinations like JEE Main and CUET, due to which the agency earns a good income every year. Although the income of NTA has reached thousands of crores of rupees, the cost of conducting the examination is also considered huge. The agency itself has to spend a huge amount for booking of examination centres, security arrangements, biometric attendance system, CCTV surveillance, software services, printing and distribution of question papers, technical management and payment of examination personnel and experts. Because of this, a large part of the total income of NTA is also spent in conducting the examination and related arrangements.
