A major train accident has occurred in Mexico. Officials said on Sunday (December 28) that at least 13 people have died due to the derailment of an interoceanic train in the country’s Oaxaca state.

According to the report of news agency Reuters, Mexico’s Navy said that there were a total of 250 people on board the train, including 9 crew members and 241 passengers. Of these, the lives of 193 people are said to be safe, while 98 people are injured, out of which 36 are being given medical aid. Officials said that the accident happened between Chiwela and Nizanda cities.

What did the President of Mexico say
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on the social media platform X that the condition of the five injured people was serious and said that senior officials had been sent to the scene to help the families of those killed. Mexico’s Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos said in a post on social media that the Attorney General’s Office has started an investigation into the incident.

The interoceanic train was inaugurated by former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in the year 2023. It is part of the larger Interoceanic Corridor project and was designed to modernize the rail link across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, connecting Mexico’s Pacific port of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast.

The aim was to create a route that could compete with the Panama Canal by expanding ports, railways and industrial infrastructure.
