Common Obesity Myths Explained By Experts: Obesity is one of the most misunderstood health problems in the world. The reason for this is not that science does not have the answers, but the problem is that years of misconceptions, misleading diet advice and social prejudices have pushed the correct information back. According to Saloni Paliwal, co-founder and COO of Voy India (formerly EarlyFit), there are many myths about obesity which are not only wrong but are also harming people’s health.

Does this happen because of lifestyle?

The biggest misconception is that obesity is only a result of a person’s lifestyle. Whereas research shows that many factors like genetics, hormones, sleep, stress, intestinal microbiome and environment work together behind this. This is the reason that despite similar diet and similar physical activity, the weight of two people can be different.

Can it be cured by eating less?

Another common myth is that “eat less and move more” is the solution. Saloni Paliwal says that this advice is not completely wrong, but it is also not sufficient to treat a complex and long-lasting disease like obesity. The hormones that control appetite and the body’s metabolism make this process much more difficult.

Is it your responsibility not to lose weight?

Similarly, many people believe that lack of willpower is responsible for not being able to lose weight. Whereas hormones like ghrelin, leptin, insulin and cortisol affect appetite and desire to eat. In such a situation, just saying work harder is not the solution to the problem. Experts say that not every obesity is visible from outside, but in many people, fat accumulates around the organs inside the body, which is called visceral obesity. This risk is particularly high in South Asian populations. Therefore, assessing health only on the basis of weight or BMI is not considered sufficient.

Read this also – Summer Fatigue: Feeling tired again and again in summer, know which disease is this a sign of?

Can weight gain again once it is lost?

Another big misconception is that once the weight is lost, it always remains there. Research shows that the body tries to maintain its old weight, due to which there is a possibility of weight gain again over time. For this reason, obesity may require long-term medical assistance. There are also many misconceptions regarding GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide and tirazepatide. However, these medicines have shown good results in clinical trials and they help in controlling appetite and metabolism. According to experts, their use is not to choose the easy path but to get the treatment done in the right way.

Is obesity a disease?

The World Health Organization, the American Medical Association and the world’s leading endocrinology organizations consider obesity as a chronic disease. It is linked to more than 200 diseases like type-2 diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea and many types of cancer. Therefore, it is not right to consider obesity as just a problem of weight gain, rather it is important to understand it as a serious health condition and seek timely treatment.

Obesity Health Risk: Obesity in India is no longer just a lifestyle problem, but has increasingly emerged as a serious health threat. It is directly related to many problems like diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Yet while checking blood pressure is a routine part of every clinic visit, obesity is often ignored. This neglect is now becoming a major cause for concern.

The picture of increasing cases of obesity in the country is also worrying. According to the National Family Health Survey, almost every fourth adult is overweight or obese. In some states this figure has reached 50 percent. The special thing is that this problem is not limited to cities only, but is spreading rapidly in rural areas also. Statistics show that a large number of women and men in villages too are struggling with this problem. In such a situation, let us now tell you why obesity is not checked frequently like blood pressure.

Obesity is no longer a lifestyle issue

There was a time when obesity was considered to be the effect of a comfortable lifestyle. But now it has become the root of many serious diseases. Especially the fat accumulated around the stomach is considered to be the most dangerous, which increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The situation is worsening rapidly at the global level also. The cases of obesity have doubled in the last 15 years and have increased three times in the last 30 years. This is a clear indication that the problem is now spreading rapidly.

How is the danger increasing due to modern lifestyle?

Changing lifestyle has completely changed the eating habits and daily habits. Today’s food is quick, cheap and often high in fat, salt and sugar. According to the World Health Organization, a large part of the world’s population is not able to do enough physical activity. Another challenge in India is that a large number of people cannot afford a balanced and healthy diet. Its effect is clearly visible on children also, where obesity is increasing rapidly due to less physical activity and high calorie food. According to the estimates of the Global Burden of Disease Study conducted in 2017, more than 144 lakh children in India are victims of obesity.

Why is regular checkup as important as blood pressure?

Regular checking of blood pressure has become common because it is easy and danger is detected in time. The same principle applies in the case of obesity. Simple methods like body mass index and waist map can identify early risk. But these have still not been made a part of regular checkups in the clinic. With timely detection, major diseases can be prevented through small changes. Also, now that obesity will be seen as a medical condition, the social stigma associated with it will also reduce.

Treatment is no longer limited to just dieting

A balanced diet, regular exercise and good sleep are still the most important ways to control obesity. But in serious cases this is not enough. There has also been a lot of progress in medical science, now surgical options like sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass are considered safer and effective. It not only helps in reducing weight but also helps in controlling the metabolism and appetite of the body.

Packaged juice is harmful: In this summer season, the expert warned that packaged juices are dangerous for health and have low nutrition. He advised to avoid this. National Nutrition Week is celebrated every year from 1 to 7 September. This year’s theme is ‘nutritious diet for all’.

Diabetes remains in danger

Packaged juice usually has less pulp of fruit and has more sugar quantity. Due to this, there is a risk of diabetes and obesity. Processed juice also lacks fiber, vitamins and minerals. Dr. Shweta Gupta, the unit head-dietics of Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, told IANS, “Packaged juices are not healthy at all. They have more sugar content and low nutrients. It has less amount of fruit pulp, while artificial taste, stabilizer, sugar/sweet substance/fruits are generally very high.”

Benefits of drinking fresh juice

Dr. Shweta Gupta advised to eat fresh fruits instead of fresh and packaged juice. This is because when the juice is prepared, its pulp is removed and along with it vitamins, minerals, fiber are removed. Therefore, avoid juice for good health, especially packaged juice. “Dr. Sukhwinder Singh Saggu, director of Minimal Access, GI and Bariatric Surgery at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, told IANS that drinking packaged fruit can increase weight, can cause insulin resistance and other health problems inste Provide a balanced mixture of antioxidants.

The best solution to avoid packaged fruit juice

Dr. Sukhwinder Singh Saggu said that, “Despite his healthy branding, packaged fruit juice often contains extra sugar and does not have essential nutrients and fiber, which provides full fruits. Also, the elements involved in making these juices often destroy the beneficial enzymes and reduce the quality of the product.” If you want to maintain a healthy diet, then the best solution is the best solution. Is. Instead choose full fruit or fresh juice, as they provide nutrition to your body.
