Is Occasional Binge Drinking Dangerous: Often people think that drinking too much alcohol occasionally is not a big deal. Especially if they drink little or nothing during the week. But now a new study is challenging this notion and saying that such habits can prove dangerous for the liver. This study conducted by researchers from America’s Keck Medicine and University of Southern California has been published in the prestigious journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. It has been revealed that drinking alcohol in excess even occasionally can significantly increase the risk of liver damage.

What came out in the research?

This research specifically focused on Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), which is one of the fastest growing liver-related problems in the world today. In this disease, fat gets accumulated in the liver, which can later cause serious conditions like swelling and scarring. Generally, this problem is seen more in people suffering from obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.

What is the effect of drinking alcohol?

The researchers not only looked at how much alcohol people drank, but also tried to understand how much effect the method of drinking has. He focused on episodic heavy drinking, i.e. the habit of drinking too much alcohol in a single day. This included four or more drinks a day for women and five or more drinks for men, that too at least once a month. It also came to light that youth and men are more inclined towards this type of drinking. Additionally, liver damage was also found to be more severe in those who drank too much alcohol at one go. Experts believe that drinking too much alcohol at one go puts sudden pressure on the liver, which increases the risk of inflammation and damage.

The results are shocking

Analyzing the data of more than 8,000 adults between 2017 and 2023, surprising results emerged. People who had MASLD and engaged in heavy drinking were found to have almost three times the risk of advanced liver fibrosis. This is a condition when scar tissue forms in the liver and its working capacity starts getting affected. An important point of the study was that the way of consuming alcohol matters more than the total quantity. That is, if two people drink equal amounts of alcohol in a week, then the person who finishes it in a single day is at greater risk for his liver.
