The hosting of 2030 Commonwealth Games has been awarded, now India’s next goal is to host the 2036 Olympics. States like Maharashtra, Haryana and Delhi have already been doing well in sports, but Khelo India Youth Games has provided an opportunity to athletes especially from other north-eastern states including Assam, Manipur and Tripura to come forward. His success in Khelo India Games is a living example of this.

Scholarships for good performing athletes, Khelo India centers have been opened in almost every district and coaches have also been made available. Khelo India Games was diversified in 2021 so that every child of every village and every city can get a chance. Four new formats emerged. Khelo India University Games, Khelo India Winter Games, Khelo India Para Games and ‘Khelo India Indigenous Games’ were also started to promote traditional sports of India. Without any doubt, efforts are on to find talent from every corner of the country.

Talent discovered, now what is being done to enhance it?

Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Sports Ministry have together made efforts to bring change in the Indian sports culture at the grassroots level. There is a plan to open at least 10 Olympics and High-Performance Centers across the country. Inman world class coaching, physiotherapy, nutrition and sports science related support will be provided.

Centers of Excellence have been opened across the country to hone talent. For example, construction of 75 stadiums of small and big stars has started in Uttar Pradesh. Indoor stadiums and other sports complexes are being built in Patna and other cities of Bihar. 23 new sports stadiums will be built in Telangana, Odisha and Tamil Nadu. Navdeep Singh, who won the gold medal in the F41 javelin throw event of the 2024 Paris Paralympics, said that better sports facilities are now being provided than before. He said that compared to earlier, athletes now start getting support in the initial stages of their careers. He also told how athletes are getting financial help, living allowance as well as high level training facilities through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the Government of India.

Neeraj Chopra has also praised the help new athletes are getting and the new environment for sports being created in the country. Is India doing better in sports?

What has been the result of opening new schemes and world class coaching and training centres? Taking the example of Asian Games, India won a total of 57 medals in the 2014 Incheon Games. In the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, the number of medals increased to 70 and then in the 2022 Games, India scored a century of medals in the Asian Games by winning 106 medals. The number of medals has almost doubled in the last two Asian Games. India has not been able to increase the number of Olympic medals. India won 7 medals in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 6 medals in the Paris Olympics. But one good aspect is that India has been sending a contingent of more than 100 athletes to the Olympics for the last three consecutive times.

At the same time, India is giving record breaking performance in Paralympics. In the last five years, the number of medals won by Indian Paralympic athletes has increased by 7 times. India had won 4 medals in the 2016 Rio Paralympics, but in 2020 it won 19 medals and in the 2024 Paris Paralympics, India broke all records. In 2024, Indian athletes won a total of 29 medals including 7 gold.

A good result of the ‘sports culture’ being developed in India was also seen in the Youth Asian Games of 2025. The 2025 Youth Asian Games were held in Bahrain, in which India gave a record-breaking performance and won a total of 48 medals. Whereas last time India had won only 14 medals.
