The Indian government strongly condemned the attack on a commercial ship off the coast of Oman and summoned America’s top diplomat. Now a big statement from the US State Department has come out on the entire incident. The US State Department said on Thursday (June 11) that it is in direct contact with India.

The Foreign Ministry had summoned America’s Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks in protest against the attack on the ship and issued a letter of protest i.e. Demarche. According to the report of Hindustan Times (HT), on India’s summoning of the US Deputy Mission Chief and the attacks on two ships, the US State Department spokesperson said, ‘The State Department is in direct contact with the Indian government regarding this matter.’

Indian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said on Wednesday (June 10) that 21 out of 24 Indian crew members on board the ship have been rescued safely after the attack on a commercial ship off the coast of Oman, while three Indians are still missing and the search is on. The Foreign Ministry said in a statement, ‘We strongly condemn the attack on the commercial vessel ‘Setebello’ near the coast of Oman.

Attacks on ships called worrying

The ministry said that ‘the continuous attacks on ships in the area are extremely worrying and are a direct result of the ongoing conflict there.’ The statement said, ‘We appeal to all parties to immediately reduce tensions and make the ongoing talks successful for a diplomatic solution, so that peace and stability can be restored in the region. The incidents of targeting commercial ships and civilian infrastructure should stop immediately and unhindered movement and trade should be restored on sea routes in accordance with international law.

Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Oman had informed on social media platform X that an incident involving a ship near the Oman coast has been reported. The embassy said it is continuously monitoring the situation and is in touch with local authorities.

It is noteworthy that on Monday (June 8) also, 24 Indian sailors aboard the Palau flagged ship MT Marivex were rescued safely after a fire incident. This incident happened south of the Strait of Hormuz. On Tuesday (June 9), External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said that MT Marivex had become inoperative near the Oman coast. All 24 crew members present on the ship were Indian citizens and all were evacuated safely. He also expressed his gratitude to the Government of Oman for its cooperation in this rescue operation.

Concern expressed over increasing tension in Western Asia

On Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs had also expressed deep concern over the rising tensions in West Asia, saying that the conflict that has been going on for more than 100 days has created a huge humanitarian crisis and has also had a serious impact on the global economy and energy supply. The ministry had appealed to all parties to immediately reduce tension and take steps towards a peaceful solution.
