Umar Khalid’s father Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas has also reacted to the sloganeering in Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He said, “I have received information that there was a protest against the bail granted to Umar and Sharjeel. They raised slogans, but did not issue any statement, which is a different thing. However, their anger or protest was not of that kind.”

Qasim Rasool said, “Actually, a trend has started now that if someone protests or raises slogans, an FIR is registered against him and a charge sheet is prepared, while rapists or convicted criminals get bail.”

Umar Khalid’s father alleged that despite lack of evidence and Umar Khalid not being present during the riots, he and others were denied bail, while some other accused in the same FIR were granted bail. He called it a political target.

He further said, “It is clear that Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid were classmates in JNU and both were named accused in the 2016 FIR. Despite this, Kanhaiya Kumar is keeping himself away from this entire matter. It seems quite strange, but his political compulsions have become shackles on his feet and nothing much can be done about it.”

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has written a letter in support of JNU alumnus Umar Khalid. In this he has mentioned the thoughts of Omar Khalid. This letter of Mamdani was shared by Khalid’s associate Banojyotsna Lahiri on the social media platform ‘X’. The caption accompanying the photo of Mamdani’s letter to Khalid read, “When prisons try to isolate people, your words become power and spread.”

Meanwhile, a group of American lawmakers has written a letter to Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra demanding bail for Omar Khalid and ensuring a fair and timely trial as per international law.
