Imagine, you are sitting at home and suddenly you get a call. The person in front calls himself an officer of police, CBI or any government agency. It says that an illegal parcel has been detected in your name or some serious crime related to your Aadhaar has come to light. In panic, before you can understand anything, you get the threat of ‘digital arrest’. In such a situation, the question arises, where did the scammers get your number and personal information? This is what we know in this article.

Why is online fraud increasing rapidly?

Cases of online fraud are continuously increasing in the country. Sometimes sextortion, sometimes cheating in the name of work from home, sometimes fake investment schemes, now the methods of scammers have become more dangerous than before. They don’t just call, but talk about you with full preparation. They know your name, address, mobile number and sometimes even information related to Aadhaar or bank. This is the reason why people easily believe his words.

Where do scammers get your data from?

Often people have this question in their mind that how does so much information of a common man reach the scammers? There are many ways behind this, through which your personal information gradually comes into their hands.

Data leak: the biggest reason

Data leak has become the biggest reason for cyber fraud today. Many times, users’ data gets leaked from an app, website or company’s server. This data is sold on the dark web, where scammers buy it. It contains phone number, email, address and sometimes even identity related information. Apart from this, registering a number in a shopping mall, hotel, online form or for any service can also be risky. If the security there is weakened, then the same data can reach the wrong hands.

Trap of phishing emails and fake websites

Phishing is still the most common and effective method. Scammers send links via SMS, email or WhatsApp that look like bank, delivery company or government websites. As soon as you click on the link, a fake website opens. Here you are asked for login details, OTP or card number. Many times, spyware gets installed in the phone without informing you, which keeps an eye on your activities and passes the data on to scammers.

Phone Call Scam: The Art of Tricking

Many scammers call pretending to be bank employees, customer care or officials of any government department. They talk so clearly that the other person does not even doubt. During the conversation, they ask small details and gradually prepare a complete profile. This information is later used in big frauds.

Social media opens up your life

Social media is also a treasure trove for scammers. From the pictures and posts posted on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn, they can guess your age, birthday, job, city and even relationships. Using this information they take you into confidence and say that they know everything about you. This increases both fear and trust.

What is the truth of ‘digital arrest’

Digital arrest is not actually a legal process. This is completely a cyber scam. In this, fraudsters make video calls or phone calls by pretending to be police, CBI, ED or customs officers. They use fake IDs, fake documents and intimidating language.
They say that you are under investigation and are currently under digital surveillance. You are then forced to transfer money or provide personal information. The truth is that no government agency makes arrests over the phone like this.

In today’s digital era, every work is done with the help of mobile and internet. Be it banking, shopping or entertainment, this is the reason why billions of apps are downloaded every year around the world. But amidst this facility, the biggest danger is of fake apps and fake websites.

Many times, due to lack of information, people trust such apps or websites which appear genuine in appearance, but from within they are designed for fraud. As soon as you download or open them, your mobile can be hacked, your data can be stolen and even money can go missing from the bank account. In such a situation, let us tell you today how to find out whether a website or app is fake or not and which method will save you from fraud.

How to know whether a website or app is fake or not

In today’s time, data has become more valuable than money. If someone gets your personal data, he can misuse it or even blackmail you. In such a situation, it is very important to know whether a website or app is real or fake. The good thing is that you can check the authenticity of any website or app by following some easy steps yourself. For this, the Government of India has provided a very useful facility on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP), where you can find out in minutes whether any app or website is real or fake.

The easiest official way to check fake website or app

1. Search by typing NCCRP in the Google search bar on your mobile or laptop.

2. In the search result you will see the official website of National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, open it.

3. After opening the website, tap on the three lines given at the top or side, which will open the entire menu.

4. In the menu you will see an option named Report and Check Suspect, click on it.

5. Here you will get an option named Check Suspect (Website/App), open it.

6. Now you will see two options Website URL and App URL. Select what you want to check.

7. Now in the given box, write the full name/URL of the link of the website or app which you want to check.

8. After entering all the information, fill the captcha and click on the Search button.

9. As soon as you search, the system will tell you whether that website or app is fake or safe.

In today’s digital era, mobile number has become an important part of our identity. Banking, social media, online shopping, everywhere our mobile number has become our identity. Along with this, cases of online fraud and fake SIM cards are increasing rapidly these days.

Many times, by misusing the copy of someone’s Aadhar card or identity card, someone else gets a mobile SIM activated on it and the real ID holder does not even know about it. Later, if that SIM is used for some wrong purpose, then the person has to face trouble. In such a situation, let us know today how we can find out if someone is using a fake SIM in your name.

How to check fake SIM?

If there is a fake SIM in your name, then to avoid this problem, the Government of India has created a special website TAFCOP (Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection). With the help of this portal, you can know in just 1 minute how many and which SIM cards are running in your name. It is very important to know how many SIMs are active in your name because if someone has activated the SIM on your ID and it is being used for wrong purposes, then you can become responsible. Your name may appear in some fraud or scam. If multiple SIMs are running without your knowledge, then the data and privacy risk also increases. Also, only a maximum of 9 SIM cards can be activated on one ID.

Find out how many SIMs are running in your name in just 1 minute.

1. First of all, go to the browser of your mobile or laptop and open the website https://tafcop.dgtelecom.gov.in/.

2. After this a box will appear on the home page, enter your mobile number in it.

3. Now fill the captcha code given below and click on Validate Captcha.

4. Now an OTP will come on your mobile, enter it and login.

5. After login, you will see the list of all the mobile numbers which are linked to your ID.

What to do if a number is not yours?

If you see a number in the list which you do not recognize or which you have not taken yourself, then select the Not My Number option given in front of that number and then click on the Report button. Now after registering the complaint, you will get a ticket ID or reference number. Also, your complaint will be investigated and if necessary, that fake SIM will be closed or removed from your ID.

Read also Is this setting not on in your phone? Stop it immediately otherwise spying may happen.
