Question 1: What are the new rules of online gaming and when will they come into effect?
answer: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has notified the ‘Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules 2026’, which will be fully implemented from May 1, 2026. To understand this, all you need to know is that earlier the world of online gaming was like an unregulated jungle, where any company could launch any kind of game and no strict action was taken if players were cheated.

Now the government has done the work of building a road in this forest. The implementation of the new rules simply means that the sector now has its own first official regulator. Under these rules, no gaming company will be able to act arbitrarily and every company will have to work under a simple model, so that the players’ money and their data remain completely safe.

Now Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI), the first country-wide regulatory body to look after online gaming, has been formed, which will control the world of gaming and increase the security of the users.

Question 2: What is the biggest difference between the old rules and the new rules?
answer: The biggest drawback of the old rules was that they only contained warnings on paper and there was no concrete arrangement to rein in the companies breaking the rules. Now the new rules have changed the whole game because now the Self-Regulatory Body (SRB) has been given a lot of powers. If any company violates the rules, then this regulatory body will have full power to immediately block that game or ban it in India.

Earlier, the path to block a game was very long and complicated, but now as soon as the order comes from the regulator, that game can be stopped from running in the country, due to which the fraud with the players can be immediately curbed. Apart from this there are 4 big differences:

Question 3: What does the validity of game certificate being 10 years mean and what will be the benefit to gamers?
answer: Suppose you have invested lakhs of rupees and years of hard work on a game, but suddenly that game is removed due to the expiry of the company’s certificate. Earlier, gaming companies had to renew their certificates every 5 years, due to which there was uncertainty in the companies and the future of gamers was always in danger.

Now the government has increased the validity of this certificate from 5 to 10 years. This simply means that if a game is legally registered for 10 years, then for the next 10 years you can invest your time and money in it without any fear because the risk of its sudden removal will be greatly reduced. Gamers will get a long and safe gaming journey.

Question 4: How will the new rules of promotion and refund affect the pocket of the common player?
answer: Often we have seen that companies show such advertisements in which misleading promises like ‘Become a millionaire instantly’ or ‘First deposit and then win’ are made, due to which people’s budget gets spoiled. In the new rules, very strictness has been taken regarding promotion and now showing any kind of false or misleading advertisement will be completely prohibited.

Now companies will have to clearly display their refund and withdrawal policies on their platforms in advance. If a gamer wants to withdraw his money or wants to leave the game for any reason, the company will be obliged to return his money within the stipulated time instead of troubling him. With this your earned money will no longer get stuck.

Question 5: Are there any special arrangements regarding the safety of children due to the new rules?
answer: The biggest danger of online gaming is on children and to remove this fear, the government has kept the safety of children at the top in the new rules. Now, to play on any gaming platform, it will become mandatory to do age verification i.e. a strict Aadhaar or KYC verification, so that no child can play betting or money games by showing false age.

For minors, parental consent will be required and if the parents wish, they can set a limit on their child’s gaming hours and expenses by informing the company. Apart from this, complete provision has also been made to stop children from gaming by sending notifications during school hours, so that children’s education is not affected and their childhood remains safe.
