Bengal Election: A historic political change has been seen in the assembly elections of West Bengal. Bharatiya Janata Party has formed the government in the state for the first time. After almost 15 years of dominance by Mamata Banerjee and TMC, BJP was successful in penetrating the political fort which was once considered almost impenetrable. While rallies, road shows and grassroots campaigns played their role, it is also being said that this time the real battlefield was social media.

The digital war behind the elections

Unlike traditional election campaigns which depended only on rallies and public meetings, in this election a digital strategy was also implemented parallel to the grassroots campaign. According to media reports, BJP’s digital team was working in many 4 star and 5 star hotels located across the state about 4 months before the elections.

From here, teams continuously created and posted content for social media platforms. The campaign materials, including videos, graphics and political messages, were designed to influence public opinion and maintain an online presence.

BJP’s digital strategy

According to media reports, this digital campaign was led by Amit Malviya. Amit Malviya is the head of BJP’s IT cell. Under his leadership, the party created an online network whose aim was to directly shape the political narrative in Bengal.

Instead of relying solely on traditional media coverage, the BJP focused on reaching out to voters through smartphones and social media platforms.

Network of 3000 influencers

The biggest aspect of this campaign was to create a network involving more than 3000 social media influencers across the state. These included both small and big content creators active on platforms like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

According to reports, it was necessary for influencers to have at least 5000 followers. Their role was to broadcast political messages, spread the election narrative and keep online discussions active throughout the election season.

The biggest advantage of BJP was that it was successful in connecting with young voters and people active on social media. Content spread through influencers spreads more quickly. This sounds more like his own than traditional political speeches. By having a consistent presence online, the party manages to dominate discussions, set the narrative and get its message across to voters again and again. In today’s politics, repeating something on social media and being visible often becomes as important as ground campaigning.
