Social Media Ban: The Malaysian government is now going to take a big step regarding the online safety of children. From June 1, such new rules will be implemented in the country, under which it will not be easy for children below 16 years of age to create accounts on social media platforms. The government wants to protect underage users from dangerous and harmful content on the Internet.

Responsibility will increase on social media companies

According to the Communications and Multimedia Commission of Malaysia (MCMC), the responsibility of enforcing the new rules will fall directly on the online platforms. This means that now social media companies will have to ensure that underage children cannot easily create accounts.

Apart from this, companies will have to strengthen content moderation, take prompt action on complaints and verify the identity of advertisers properly. If any content has been changed or tampered, it will also be necessary to clearly label it. Although companies will be given some time relaxation to implement these rules, its duration has not been decided yet.

Government’s focus on children’s safety

In the last few years, cases of online fraud, cyber bullying and objectionable content related to children have increased rapidly in Malaysia. For this reason, the government is increasing strict monitoring on social media platforms.

The threats the government is most concerned about include online gambling, scams, child exploitation, cyber bullying and inflammatory content related to religion or race. Officials believe that it has become extremely important to keep young children away from such content.

Age verification system may start soon

Malaysia is also preparing to launch age verification system for users this year. Under this, social media platforms may have to confirm the age of users. However, this is also considered to be the biggest challenge. If platforms ask for identity proof, people’s privacy may be at risk. On the other hand, questions have also been raised on the accuracy of third-party age verification tools. Now it remains to be seen how Malaysia handles this balance.

Increasing strictness in many countries of the world

Malaysia is not the only country that is cracking down on children’s social media use. Australia passed a law in 2024 that almost completely bans social media for children under 16 years of age.

Apart from this, similar rules have also been implemented in many states of France, Britain and America. In India too, the Goa government has ordered to ban the use of social media by children below 16 years of age.

Impact on companies like Meta, TikTok and YouTube

The new rules will also affect the world’s big tech companies. Companies like Meta, TikTok, YouTube and X may now have to make changes to their systems and policies in Malaysia.

There is a large number of young internet users in South-East Asia, hence this area is considered very important for tech companies. But now increasing government regulations are becoming a new challenge for these companies.

UPI Payment Security: UPI (Unified Payment Interface) is now going to change the methods of online payment. In today’s superfast life, transactions up to thousands of rupees with just one click occur in seconds. Due to this, everyday life has become cashless and much easier. Now, whether to distribute the bill in the restaurant or to borrow money from a friend, UPI has become an important means for digital transactions. But now a big change is going to come, which will affect millions of users. Let’s know what is this change.

New change in UPI transaction

The National Payments Corporation of India has announced that now Person to Person ‘Collect Request’ or ‘Bridge Transaction’ feature will be closed from 1 October 2025 i.e. from today. Apps like Phone Pay, Google Pay and Paytm will no longer allow users to send payment requests directly to friends, relatives or their experts.

What is UPI ‘Collect request’ feature

Actually, with the help of this feature, one person could send a payment request to another user by entering UPI ID. For example, if you want to take money from your friend, then you could send them a request from your UPI app. After this, your friend would accept that request and put his pean, the money would be transferred to your account. This feature was very convenient, but at the same time it was becoming dangerous over time. Let’s know how.

Why was this feature dangerous

Actually, even though this facility was made for ease, with the help of this, the fraudsters were benefiting a lot. Scammers used to send fake requests to unknown users and implicate them to pay. Although earlier, the National Payments Corporation of India had reduced the request limit to ₹ 2000 to prevent misuse, but even then the fraud continued. Now after this, this feature is being closed forever to stop this fraud.

Traders will still have access

The important thing is that this feature will not be completely eliminated. Marchants like IRCTC, Flipkart, Amazon or Netflix will be able to send payment requests to customers for ticket booking, shopping or subscription. This feature is being banned only for Person to Person Transaction.

How to affect users

After the closure of this feature, from 1 October 2025, you cannot ask for money from friends or relatives using UPI Collect request. To transfer the money, you have to use the mobile number directly from the QR code, the receiver’s UPI ID, or the mobile number linked to UPI.

This feature is being closed for the purpose of increasing the security of digital payment. With this, now after this step, users will get relief from the scam. Users are advised to always check the payment request thoroughly before transferring money and must find out where the money is going.
