India has emerged as a leader in 5G standalone (SA) deployment. The country has achieved 52% availability rate in Q4 2024 (fourth quarter of 2024). Ookla has reported in its report that China (80% availability), India (52% availability) and the US (24% availability) have been the leaders in adopting 5G SA, while Europe is behind with only 2% availability. In research, this sharp progress of India has been credited with initial deployment, spectrum Strategy and Telecom operators to invest in 5G core networks. Due to this growth, India is making an important place in the expansion of 5G SA network at global level.

Ookla’s UnderChina dominates Global 5G SA market and maintains the most availability. 52% of India’s availability leads it ahead of many developed countries. The US, though lags behind India, remains at the third position with 24% availability. The report further states that the slow deployment rate in Europe shows low operator investment and policy challenges. Regarding slow expansion of 5G SA in Europe, experts believe that it may be due to low investment and dependence on traditional networks by companies there.

Apart from availability, Global 5G SA speed was also compared to Ookla’s research. The average 5G SA download speed in Europe was 221.17 Mbps, which is much lower than the US (384.42 MBPS), Developed Asia-Pacific (237.04 MBPS) and Developing Asia-Pacific (259.73 MBPS). At the same time, India recorded an average 5G SA download speed of 260.71 Mbps in Q4 2024, which was more than China (224.82 MBPS), Japan (254.18 MBPS) and Europe (221.17 Mbps). However, India’s average latency was 52.24 milliseconds and upload speed 15.69 Mbps, which puts it behind some other developed markets.

Spectrum management and 5G infrastructure are being focused in India, which is expected that 5G speed will be better in India in the coming years.
