With the beginning of Antimicrobial Awareness Week, concern is once again being raised across the world about the increasing misuse of antibiotics. WHO has been making people aware every year since 2015 about the danger of anti-microbial resistance i.e. AMR. This problem has now become so serious that according to a study made public in Science Direct, by the year 2050, most of the deaths in the world may be due to this reason. In such a situation, let us tell you today whether you too are taking more medicines than necessary. If you do this then the antibiotic may become ineffective on your body.

What is anti microbial resistance?

According to experts, when the bacteria or viruses in our body become so strong that medicines do not work on them, then it is called anti-microbial resistance. Antibiotic medicines taken for common cold, fever or infection often cure us. But if they are used excessively or incorrectly, bacteria develop resistance to these medicines. According to WHO report, in 2019, 12.7 lakh people died directly due to anti-microbial resistance. At the same time, it became an indirect cause in 49.5 lakh deaths. This is why it is being called the silent pandemic of the future.

The threat of antibiotics is increasing in India too

Billions of doses of antibiotics are being used every year in India and this figure is continuously increasing. According to a report published in Latest e-Clinical Medicine regarding this, multi-drug resistant organisms have been found in 83 percent of Indian patients. This means that common antibiotics have lost their effect on these patients. This condition is being considered a big threat not only for the patients but also for the health system of the country. According to this study, India is at the center of superbug explosion. The prevalence of MDROs in patients undergoing endoscopic procedures is higher than in other countries. MDRO has been found in 83 percent of patients in India, while this problem has been seen in 31.5 percent of cases in Italy, 20.1 percent of cases in America and 10.8 percent of cases in Netherlands.

What warning did the doctor give?

Experts have warned about this problem that if the right steps are not taken now, then this situation will go out of control in the coming years. At the same time, the new report of WHO also says that South East Asia, which includes India, is one of the most affected areas. At the same time, experts say that not every disease requires antibiotics. Many times viral fever or cold gets cured on its own in 2 to 3 days. At the same time, taking antibiotics without doctor’s advice becomes even more dangerous.

If you have mild symptoms like headache, cough, fever or cold and you take medicine again and again without consulting the doctor, then be careful now. Health experts say that such self-medication and repeated use of antibiotics is creating such a condition in the body in which the medicine stops being effective. This is called antibiotic resistance which is being considered a big health problem in the coming times.

Shocking revelation in WHO report

According to a new report by the World Health Organization, in the year 2023, one out of every 6 bacterial infections has been found to be resistant to antibiotics. This means that common medicines were not working on so many bacterial infections. WHO said that this problem is most seen in bacteria causing infections in the urinary tract and blood flow. According to the Global Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance Report 2025, the rate of antibiotic resistance is highest in the region of South East Asia including India. According to the report, 70 percent of blood flow infection and more than 78 percent of E. coli infection cases in India have been found to be resistant to antibiotics. This means that common medicines are no longer working and treatment is becoming difficult.

Why is the danger increasing?

Experts say that people buy antibiotics without doctor’s advice and leave the course of medicine incomplete. Due to this, not only the harmful bacteria of the body but also the beneficial bacteria are killed. Due to which gradually such bacteria start growing in the body which cannot be eliminated by any medicine. This condition is called antibiotic resistance. According to doctors, if this condition continues like this then even normal viral can take a serious form. In such a situation, patients may have to stay in the hospital for a longer time and the cost of treatment will also increase. Regarding this, WHO has also warned that if the right steps are not taken even now, this problem may become more dangerous in the coming years.

What to do and what not to do?

Do not take any antibiotic medicine in every minor illness and if there is no improvement in the disease then take antibiotic medicine only on the advice of the doctor.

Finish the course of medicine, do not leave it midway.

Do not give the medicine that the doctor has prescribed for you to anyone else.

Also, take care of cleanliness and try to avoid infection as much as possible.
