The real name of Ozempic is semaglutide. It mimics the GLP-1 hormone. Actually, a hormone called GLP-1 is released in the body after eating food. According to Dr. Anil Gomber, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine and Diabetologist, Yatharth Super Specialty Hospital, Ozempic is a good medicine for type 2 diabetes and weight management, but it also has GI side effects, which become more visible when the dose is increased. However, it should not be applied without consulting a doctor.

What does Ozempic do?

• Delays stomach emptying, hence reduces appetite.
• Sends a signal to the brain that the stomach is full.
• Produces more insulin and reduces glucagon hormone.
• This controls blood sugar and reduces weight.

For how much money is this injection available?

According to media reports, this injection can reduce weight by 15 percent in a year, but after stopping the medicine, two-thirds of the weight increases again. This injection has to be given once a week. In India, the cost of getting it installed is Rs 10,000 to 20,000 per month. The latest studies of 2025 found that due to this injection the risk of pancreatitis can increase by 146 percent. At the same time, there is also a risk of rare eye disease NAION. On stopping the medicine the weight increases again.

Type 2 Diabetes Treatment: Pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk has launched its famous diabetes drug Ozempic in India, which is considered a big step in the field of treatment of type-2 diabetes. The company has fixed the price of its initial 0.25 mg weekly dose at Rs 8,800. This medicine comes in the form of a pre-filled injection pen, which is administered once a week. In view of the rapidly increasing cases of diabetes and obesity in India, experts are considering it an important step. CDSCO had approved this medicine for adult patients with type-2 diabetes in October, after which its launch in India was long awaited.

How does the medicine work?

Experts say that the effect of Ozempic is not limited only to blood sugar control. It can help in reducing appetite, keeping sugar level balanced in the body and in weight management in the long run. Dr. Unnikrishnan of Chalerm Diabetes Institute told NI that “This medicine becomes effective only when it is combined with a regular routine like exercise, balanced diet and timely medication.” They say that it would be a mistake to consider it as a quick weight loss medicine, it can also help in reducing heart and kidney related problems in diabetes patients.

Why did India become a big market for pharmaceutical companies?

India ranks second in the world in terms of the number of Type 2 diabetes patients. Along with this, cases of obesity are also continuously increasing. This is the reason why the demand for medicines to maintain weight and control sugar has increased rapidly. According to an estimate, the global market of this category may reach approximately 150 billion dollars in the next few years. Ozempic has been approved in the US since 2017 and this drug has become very popular there due to its weight loss ability.
