Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said in a joint statement, “A ceasefire was agreed upon between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Doha on 18-19 October, followed by a meeting between Afghanistan and Pakistan in Istanbul on 25-30 October, brokered by Turkey and Qatar.” During this, all the parties talked about strengthening the ceasefire.

Meeting will be held again on November 6

Importantly, there will be a high-level meeting between Taliban and Islamabad once again in Istanbul on November 6, in which the further outline of the ceasefire will be decided. Regarding this, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that all the parties have agreed that along with maintaining peace, a monitoring mechanism should be created to punish those who break the ceasefire.

Afghanistan gave a befitting reply to Pakistan

Tension had increased between Pakistan and Afghanistan after the blasts in Kabul earlier this month. The Taliban government gave a befitting reply to this and attacked the Pakistan Army. Afghan officials claim they retaliated, killing 58 Pakistani soldiers, while Pakistan’s army said 23 of its soldiers were killed.

After this war, Qatar held a meeting, after which a temporary ceasefire was agreed upon. Then four days of talks in Istanbul ended without any agreement, but with the efforts of Turkey and Qatar, both sides returned to the table for talks. Now a consensus has been reached on ceasefire.

Saudi Arabia on Sunday (October 19) welcomed the ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan following the recent border clashes. Besides, he also appreciated the mediation of Qatar and Türkiye, who helped in the talks held in Doha.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry said that this agreement will work to immediately implement the ceasefire and create the necessary mechanism to maintain long-term peace between the two countries. “The Saudi Foreign Ministry welcomes that Pakistan and Afghanistan signed an immediate ceasefire during the talks in Doha and agreed to establish mechanisms to ensure lasting peace and stability,” the statement said.

Saudi Arabia supported all efforts to promote peace and security and reiterated its promise to ensure stability and prosperity for the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan. “The state supports all efforts that bring peace and stability and is committed to ensuring security, stability and prosperity for the people of both countries,” the statement said, adding that the Foreign Ministry expressed hope that the agreement will reduce tensions along the shared border of the two countries. The statement further said, “We hope that this step will help in ending the tension on the border.”

What did Qatar say?

Earlier, Qatar had told that Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and further meetings will be held to maintain it. The Doha talks mediated by Qatar and Türkiye are being considered a major diplomatic success in this matter. A day before the talks, Pakistan had violated the ceasefire in Afghanistan’s south-eastern province of Paktika, killing 17 people, including three Afghan cricket players. Many civilians were harmed in the air strikes.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also welcomed the ceasefire and said that the next meeting will be held in Türkiye, in which both sides will work on monitoring and stabilization of the ceasefire.

Who was present in the meeting?

Taliban government’s Defense Minister Mullah Yaqoob and Afghan intelligence department GDI chief Mullah Abdul Haq Wasiq were present from the Afghan side in the first round of talks held in Doha on Saturday. Also present from Pakistan’s side were Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and chief of Pakistani intelligence agency ISI Asim Malik.
