America’s big think tank Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) has warned that after Operation Sindoor, there could be another war between India and Pakistan in the year 2026. The report claims that due to increase in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, there is a possibility of war between the two countries. According to Indian intelligence agency, more than 30 Pakistani terrorists are active in Jammu region in this winter.

American think tank’s claim regarding India-Pakistan war

CFR said that if there is a war between India and Pakistan, it can affect America as well. India had launched Operation Sindoor on 7 May 2025 in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack on 22 April. Under this, the Indian Army targeted the hideouts of terrorists in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). After this, the Indian Air Force (IAF) also wreaked havoc on the Pakistani army which had come to help the terrorists. IAF destroyed many airbases of Pakistani Air Force.

India is increasing its stockpile of weapons

However, there has been no major terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir since Operation Sindoor. Currently, ceasefire is going on between the two countries and in such a situation, India is further strengthening its weapons arsenal. The Defense Ministry has approved the purchase of various ammunition and military equipment including missiles, rockets and drones worth Rs 79 thousand crore for the three forces. These include Loitering Munition and Pinaka Rocket for the Army and Astra Missile and Spice-1000 Bomb for the Air Force. Approval has also been given to lease additional High Altitude Long Range (HALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft System for the Navy.

‘Pakistan-Afghanistan war also possible next year’

After the huge losses suffered after Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has also started talks with Turkey and China for the purchase of new drones and air defense systems. The report has also expressed the possibility of conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan in the year 2026. However, this will not affect American interests. In October this year, there was a fierce clash between Pakistan and Taliban on the 2600 km long Durand Line. The armies of both the countries fired in each other’s areas and claimed to destroy the posts. Since then there has been a rift in diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The CFR report is based on a survey of American foreign policy experts. It includes former diplomats, military officers, professors and policy experts. Its purpose is to make American policy-makers aware of those areas of the world where wars may break out in the future.

There was firing again on Chaman border between the armies of Pakistan and Afghanistan on Thursday (6 November 2025). Afghan media has claimed that apart from firing on the Afghan army, the Pakistani army also fired mortars. This clash is taking place at a time when representatives of both the countries are holding the third round of talks in Turkey.

PAK fired mortar as soon as peace talks started

As soon as peace talks between the two countries started in Turkey, the Pakistani Army violated the ceasefire. Chaman border crossing connects Spin Boldak to Kandahar province of Afghanistan. In Lukman village here, the Pakistani Army has violated the ceasefire and started firing on the military bases of Afghanistan. Apart from attacking the Afghan army, the Pakistani army has also targeted a shopping complex located in the village, after which a stampede-like situation was created in the entire area.

Pakistan also targeted residential areas

The armies of both the countries fired indiscriminately at each other. After the first round of talks between the two countries in Doha on October 19, an agreement was reached on ceasefire. After this, in the second round of talks, it was agreed to extend the ceasefire till 6 November. Now, as soon as the third round of talks started, the Pakistani Army violated the ceasefire and again attacked the Afghan army and residential areas.

The differences between the two delegations over cross-border terrorist activities remained so intense that the second round of talks ended without any progress. Pakistan repeatedly accused the Taliban regime of supporting the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group and sought written guarantees from Afghanistan that it would prevent such groups from operating on Afghan soil.

There has been tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan for a long time. After Pakistan’s air strikes, Taliban also gave a befitting reply. After this, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif came on the backfoot. Now an agreement has been reached between the two countries on ceasefire. Turkey and Qatar have played an important role in this. Turkiye issued a collective statement saying that the meeting would be held again on November 6.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said in a joint statement, “A ceasefire was agreed upon between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Doha on 18-19 October, followed by a meeting between Afghanistan and Pakistan in Istanbul on 25-30 October, brokered by Turkey and Qatar.” During this, all the parties talked about strengthening the ceasefire.

Meeting will be held again on November 6

Importantly, there will be a high-level meeting between Taliban and Islamabad once again in Istanbul on November 6, in which the further outline of the ceasefire will be decided. Regarding this, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that all the parties have agreed that along with maintaining peace, a monitoring mechanism should be created to punish those who break the ceasefire.

Afghanistan gave a befitting reply to Pakistan

Tension had increased between Pakistan and Afghanistan after the blasts in Kabul earlier this month. The Taliban government gave a befitting reply to this and attacked the Pakistan Army. Afghan officials claim they retaliated, killing 58 Pakistani soldiers, while Pakistan’s army said 23 of its soldiers were killed.

After this war, Qatar held a meeting, after which a temporary ceasefire was agreed upon. Then four days of talks in Istanbul ended without any agreement, but with the efforts of Turkey and Qatar, both sides returned to the table for talks. Now a consensus has been reached on ceasefire.

The first round of talks was held between Pakistan and Afghanistan on Saturday (October 18, 2025) in Doha, the capital of Qatar, in which both the countries agreed not to attack each other’s military bases and residential areas. Also, according to the Taliban government of Afghanistan, both the countries have decided that the country will not provide any help to the terrorists working against Pakistan and this has been Afghanistan’s stand for years.

Now the next round of talks between the two countries will be held in Türkiye’s capital Istanbul on October 25. Let us tell you that the talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which started at 3 pm on Saturday in Doha, ended at 11:30 pm, after which the first statement came from Qatar. Qatar said that through the mediation of it and Turkey, both the countries have agreed to the ceasefire.

Pakistani Defense Minister agreed

After this, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif gave a statement after the first round of talks that a ceasefire agreement has been reached between Pakistan and Afghanistan and terrorist activities from Afghanistan on Pakistani soil will be stopped immediately. Both neighboring countries will respect each other’s land and sovereignty.

After this statement, Afghanistan government spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid issued a statement saying that in the first round of talks, Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed not to attack military bases and residential areas. It has also been decided that both the countries will not support those organizations which attack Pakistan.

Afghanistan government issued statement

However, while clarifying his statement, Zabiullah Mujahid briefly wrote on ‘X’, ‘His statement of not supporting organizations attacking Pakistan is not a part of any formal or joint declaration, but is the old stand of the Taliban government of Afghanistan and it has only been agreed between the two sides in Doha that no action will be taken against each other, which is the most important point of the agreement.’

Who was present in the meeting?

Taliban government’s Defense Minister Mullah Yaqoob and Afghan intelligence department GDI chief Mullah Abdul Haq Wasiq were present from the Afghan side in the first round of talks held in Doha on Saturday. Also present from Pakistan’s side were Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and chief of Pakistani intelligence agency ISI Asim Malik. In such a situation, it has to be seen what comes out in the next round of talks to be held in Istanbul and whether both the countries are able to establish peace on the basis of agreement in the next 6 days.

Even after Pakistan’s airstrike, Afghanistan has decided to participate in the meeting to be held in Doha regarding ceasefire. The Taliban government issued a statement condemning Pakistan’s attack and said that Afghanistan has currently restrained its army from taking revenge. The Taliban said that to maintain the dignity and security of the ceasefire, any retaliatory action has been avoided for now.

Afghanistan’s Defense Minister reached Doha

Taliban government spokesperson Zabihullah Muhajid posted on social media platform X and informed that a high-level delegation led by Defense Minister Maulvi Mohammad Yacob Mujahid has left for Doha. Pakistan attacked Paktika province of Afghanistan late night on Friday (17 October 2025), in which three of its local cricketers were killed.

Taliban will not retaliate against Pakistan right now

In a statement issued by the Taliban, it said, “Pakistan’s attack is condemnable, but for the sake of regional peace, it will not retaliate against Pakistan right now. This decision has been taken so that the atmosphere of talks between the two sides remains respectful and peaceful.” A delegation of Pakistan has also reached Qatar’s capital Doha for peace talks.

‘Pakistan is taking provocative action’

The Taliban statement said, “The government of Afghanistan considers Pakistan’s attack as a provocation and an attempt to prolong the war. Despite knowing that we have the right to respond to Pakistan’s actions, we have decided to refrain from new actions. Whatever conflict is taking place in the region is due to the provocation by Pakistan. Afghanistan believes in regional solutions and regional security.”

While Pakistan was unsuccessfully trying to stand firm in front of India, now it has come to its knees in front of Afghanistan. After continuous attacks by Taliban, Shahbaz Sharif now wants to talk. Not only this, he has held India responsible for the attacks on Pakistan.

India has strongly reacted to the statement of Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, in which he had said that Taliban is waging a proxy war against Pakistan on behalf of India. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in the weekly press conference on Thursday (16 October 2025), completely rejected these allegations of Pakistan, calling them absurd and baseless. Randhir Jaiswal said, “Pakistan is used to blaming others for its internal failures. It has been Pakistan’s policy to harbor terrorism and use it as a political weapon.”

Randhir Jaiswal said that India stands firmly in favor of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Afghanistan. He told that India is closely monitoring the ongoing conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are keeping an eye on the situation. Afghanistan has the right to sovereignty over its territories. Pakistan should understand that not every problem can be solved by blaming others. This statement of India has come at a time when 48-hour ceasefire is in force between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The ceasefire came after fierce border clashes and Pakistani air strikes, in which dozens of soldiers and civilians were killed.

Pakistan is a haven for terrorism – Ministry of External Affairs

In the statement, the Foreign Ministry reiterated the accusation on Pakistan of promoting terrorism. The statement said that Pakistan has been giving shelter to terrorist organizations for years. India and neighboring countries have been attacked many times from its soil. Now when he himself is suffering from the same terror, he is blaming others, this is his old strategy. India also said that Pakistan’s interference in the internal affairs of Afghanistan and air strikes there are a threat to regional peace. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that India is committed to stability and cooperation in the region and opposes any form of violence.

Pakistan’s accusation and India’s reaction

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif had said in an interview to Geo TV on Wednesday that the Afghan Taliban is now fighting as a proxy against Pakistan on behalf of India. Their decisions are being taken at the behest of Delhi.” He also said that he doubts the sustainability of the 48-hour ceasefire, as Kabul has now become a proxy of Delhi. India called this statement diplomatically irresponsible and said that Pakistan should first take action against terrorist organizations growing on its soil and not spread lies.

New warmth in India-Afghan relations

Relations between India and Afghanistan have been gradually normalizing in recent months. Although India has not yet formally recognized the Taliban regime, it has begun to strengthen its ties again through humanitarian aid and development projects. Randhir Jaiswal said that India’s technical mission in Kabul is now being transferred to the embassy and this process will be completed in the next few days. He said that India will continue to cooperate with the Afghan people in the fields of humanitarian aid, education and health.
