When did Pakistan conduct its first nuclear test?

There are a total of nine countries on the world map which are nuclear rich. India and Pakistan are also included in this list. Pakistan conducted its first nuclear test in May 1998. According to NTI report, Pakistan has conducted a total of six nuclear tests so far. It is claimed to have 170 nuclear weapons.

Data from the US Seismic Agency (USGS) show that from May to November, many shallow tremors were felt in areas like Kalat, Zhob, Barkhan and Dera Ghazi Khan, whose depth was about 10 kilometers or less. The biggest among these tremors was the 5.3 magnitude earthquake of June 28, whose epicenter was near Barkhan.

This is the area where Pakistan conducted its nuclear tests in 1998. The earthquakes that occurred in Pakistan raise questions. If we look at the seismic pattern, the doubt deepens. Three to four shallow earthquakes were recorded between May and June 2025 on almost the same line between Kalat and Barkhan and all were felt at depths of 10 kilometers or less.

Why is suspicion increasing?

Seismic experts believe that if tremors are recorded repeatedly at the same place, at the same depth and of almost the same intensity, then it is not just ‘natural seismic activity’, it can also be the result of an artificial explosion or energy release below the earth’s surface.

Three consecutive aftershocks (May and June 2025) in the Chagai zone of Kalat Barkhan, the fourth aftershock of M 5.3 on June 28, 2025, which is directly within about 100 km of the Chagai test site. The depth of all these incidents is similar, due to which this pattern cannot be called natural.

Is this ‘Post-Test Reactivation’?

Such a shallow pattern is generally not considered natural. Such waves are often associated with explosions or underground activities. Scientists believe that if tremors of almost the same intensity occur repeatedly in the same area, then it may be a sign not only of ‘natural seismic activity’ but also of some ‘man-made energy release’.

Similar small tremors were recorded in the surrounding areas after North Korea’s 2017 tests, which were later called ‘post-test reactivation’. This is a situation when, after a nuclear explosion under the ground, the stress accumulated in the layers is slowly released and is recorded in the form of small earthquakes for months. Pakistan’s shocks of May-June 2025 also present a similar picture.

Earthquake 4 times within 6 months in the same area

According to what the data shows, 4 earthquakes in the same area within 6 months, none of the earthquakes having a depth of 10 km and a clustering pattern similar to what was seen after North Korea’s 2017 nuclear test make it likely that either mining or man-made blasting activity is going on in Pakistan or a low-intensity underground test has been conducted, which has been recorded as a natural earthquake.

In scientific terms, the stress created in the earth’s layers due to the nuclear test can come out in the form of ‘micro quakes’ i.e. small earthquakes for years to come. If the tremors of May-June 2025 are due to the same ‘stress reactivation’, then the question arises whether Pakistan has again ‘activated’ something underground after 1998?

Not confirmed by USGS or CTBTO testing

Till now, no international organization, be it USGS or Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), has officially confirmed any ‘active test’ in Pakistan, but the way tremors are being felt repeatedly in Kalat, Barkhan and Chagai areas, it has put even geologists into thinking. Many experts believe that this is either ‘stress reactivation’ i.e. the after effect of old tests or new underground tests of much lower intensity, which are being recorded as natural earthquakes.

If America’s claims are proven true, it will not only be a violation of international nuclear ban treaties, but will also signal new instability for the entire region, including India. The land of Balochistan is silent at the moment, but the vibration going on beneath it can shake the world again. The only question is whether Pakistan is again adopting the same path which shocked the whole world in 1998?

Tremors on Pakistan-Afghanistan border

The special thing is that during Operation Sindoor, mild earthquake tremors were felt for several days on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. During that time, it was feared that these vibrations could be due to Pakistan’s nuclear test, but no concrete evidence was revealed.

According to the latest report (2025) of SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute), a global think tank that keeps track of nuclear weapons around the world, Pakistan has 170 nuclear weapons in its arsenal. According to the report, India has slightly more nuclear weapons than Pakistan i.e. 172.

12,405 nuclear weapons worldwide
