Petrol Diesel Price Hike: Assembly elections are ending in the country on Wednesday (28 April 2026). In such a situation, speculations started on social media that as soon as the elections are over, the government will increase the prices of petrol and diesel. Meanwhile, the Central Government made it clear that there is no plan to increase the prices of petrol and diesel after the assembly elections are over tomorrow. This assurance from the government has come at a time when there is instability in the global oil market due to the situation in the Middle East.

Will the price of petrol and diesel increase after the elections?

Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said, ‘LPG, petrol and diesel are available in sufficient quantity in the country and their prices are not increasing, so please do not panic. We have seen people buying petrol and diesel in panic at some places. We are in constant touch with the state governments.

In Andhra Pradesh, on Monday (27 April 2026), thousands of drivers gathered at petrol pumps fearing shortage of petrol and diesel. CM Chandrababu Naidu had directed state officials and OMC (oil marketing companies) officials to work together to restore normalcy in the supply of petrol and diesel.

We have no shortage of fuel: Central Government

Sujata Sharma said that priority is being given to supply so that availability of stock is ensured and there is no shortage of any kind. Earlier, Sujata Sharma had said that oil companies are incurring a loss of about Rs 20 per liter on petrol and about Rs 100 per liter on diesel.

Sharma admitted that due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia, imports of crude oil, LPG and piped gas (PNG) have been affected, but the government has taken necessary steps to deal with it. He said that 100 percent supply has been ensured for domestic LPG and PNG consumers. Besides, the supply of CNG used for transportation is also continuing in full capacity. Although the supply of commercial LPG was affected to some extent, it has now been restored to about 70 percent.

Priority being given to essential industries: Center

He said that essential industries like medicine, steel, seeds and agriculture are also being given priority, so that there is no major problem. To help the needy people, the supply of small 5 kg LPG cylinders has been almost doubled, which are especially used by migrant labourers. This confidence of the government has come at a time when there is volatility in the global oil market due to uncertainty in West Asia. Officials said that the situation is being constantly monitored so that fuel supply and prices remain stable in the country.
