Amidst the ongoing energy crisis and inflation across the world, an appeal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has seen a completely opposite effect in Jammu. PM Narendra Modi had urged the countrymen to use less edible oil. But after this appeal in Jammu, there is panic in the market. Instead of using less, people have started buying more and more oil due to fear of shortage and inflation.

In view of the global crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently requested the countrymen to minimize the use of edible oil in their kitchen. The Prime Minister had said that if people do this, it will be a big step taken in the direction of national interest and patriotism.

When Rahul Gandhi called PM Modi a ‘traitor’, Mehbooba Mufti said, ‘So much…’

Fear started troubling the oil trader

Initially, the oil traders of Jammu were quite nervous after hearing this appeal. They started fearing that the Prime Minister’s call would have a direct impact on their business and there would be a huge decline in oil sales. But, the ground reality proved to be exactly the opposite.

Traders’ worries gone, competition to order stock

Jammu’s big oil trader Suraj Singh says that after the Prime Minister’s appeal, the market environment has completely changed. There is a fear among the people that there may be a huge shortage of edible oil in the coming days and they may have to face huge inflation. Due to this fear (Panic Buying), people have started buying more oil than their requirement and stocking it in their homes.

Suraj Singh said that due to this sudden increase in demand, the prices of mustard oil in Jammu have increased by about ₹ 30 per liter. Despite the increasing prices, people are continuously purchasing. In view of this unexpected demand for oil in the market, traders are now having to order additional stock from outside, so that the needs of the customers can be met.

In today’s time, shopping is no longer limited to just the necessities. Many times people make huge purchases of unnecessary things, especially when they feel that a product is going to expire soon or they may miss a special offer. In the language of psychology, this behavior is called panic buying. This condition occurs when people start making sudden and excessive purchases due to fear of shortage or missing the opportunity. This habit is not limited to ration or essential goods, but is also seen in new gadgets, trading products and online sales. In such a situation, let us now tell you which people are prone to panic buying and why the madness of buying anything increases.

What is panic buying?

Panic buying is a condition when people suddenly start buying large quantities of an item due to fear of shortage or seeing others buying it. Sometimes this behavior is also related to fear of missing something or FOMO. This is the reason why people rush to buy a new smartphone, shoe collection or trading gadgets.

How does the brain decide during panic buying?

According to psychology, when messages appear about a product such as only a few items are left or the offer is about to end, the amygdala part of the brain becomes active. This is the part that signals danger or harm. Here there is a danger of losing something. As soon as a person buys that thing, a chemical called dopamine is released in the brain, which gives him a feeling of satisfaction or victory.

In which people is this habit seen more?

According to psychology, the tendency of panic buying is easily seen in people who have a feeling of insecurity or who are influenced by social comparison. Experts say that when people feel that the demand for something is high and the supply is low, their mind goes into survival mode. In such a situation, a person starts thinking that if he does not have what others have, he will be left behind. In today’s era, social media further intensifies this behavior; when people see people around them running after a particular brand or product, they become inclined to do the same.

How to avoid panic buying?

According to experts, some simple measures can be adopted to avoid this habit. Before buying any expensive or trending item, you should give yourself some time, so that the sudden curiosity can be reduced. Making a list of essential items before shopping can also be helpful. Apart from this, it is also important to stop the continuous notifications related to sales and discounts, because sometimes these messages trigger panic buying.
