Brahmin vs Thakur’s share in power in UP

According to media reports, the population of Brahmins in UP is about 10-11% while the population of Thakurs is about 6-7%. BJP has a total of 258 MLAs in the UP Assembly. Of these, 42 are Brahmins, 45 are Thakurs, 84 are OBC, 59 are Scheduled Caste, 0 are Muslim and 28 are MLAs from other upper castes. Which includes other castes including Vaishya, Kayastha, Punjabi and Khatri.

Whereas in the Legislative Council, BJP has a total of 79 MLCs, of which 14 are Brahmins, 23 Thakurs, 26 OBCs, 2 Scheduled Castes, 2 Muslims and 12 are from other upper castes. If we look at these figures, according to the caste equation, the number of Brahmins is more than that of Thakurs, but their representation in the Assembly and Legislative Council is less than that of Rajputs.

While BJP has 42 Brahmin MLAs in the Assembly and 45 Thakur MLAs, the number of members in the Legislative Council is 14 and 23 respectively. This year, when the meeting of Thakur MLAs was held during the monsoon session, it was seen as a show of solidarity towards the Chief Minister, but this time on the meeting of Brahmin MLAs, the party has given them advice.

Pankaj Chaudhary, the younger son of Gorakhpur industrialist Bhagwati Chaudhary and former District Panchayat President Ujjwal Chaudhary, started his political journey in 1989 as a councilor of Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation. Born on 15 November 1964 in an industrialist family of Gorakhpur, Pankaj Chaudhary received his education from Gorakhpur University. Became a District Working Committee member of Bharatiya Janata Party in the year 1990 itself. In the year 1991, he was elected MP from Maharajganj parliamentary seat in the 10th Lok Sabha on the BJP symbol. Elected as MP in the 11th and 12th Lok Sabha in the year 1996, 1998.

Defeated SP’s Akhilesh in 1999, re-elected in 2004. In 2009, he was defeated by late Harsh Vardhan of Congress. Has been a member of Lok Sabha continuously since 2014. The party did not leave Pankaj Chaudhary’s hand. Chaudhary became MP for the fifth time this time. He became MP again in 2019. In the first expansion of the Modi cabinet, he got the post of Union Minister of State. Won the elections in 2024 and became a minister.
