Story of Param Ekadashi

Lord Shri Krishna said, O Arjun, the name of this Ekadashi is Param. This fast should be observed as per the rules mentioned earlier and Lord Vishnu should be worshiped with incense, lamp, naivedya, flowers etc.

Let me tell you the sacred story of this Ekadashi, which happened with the Maharishis in the city of Kampilya. Listen carefully – There lived a very religious Brahmin named Sumedha in the city of Kampilya. His wife was very pious and devoted to her husband. Due to some past sin, the couple was living a life of extreme poverty.

Brahmins did not get alms even when they asked for alms. That Brahmin’s wife, despite being devoid of clothes, used to serve her husband and after giving food to the guest, she herself remained hungry. She never demanded anything from her husband. Both husband and wife were living a life of extreme poverty.

One day the Brahmin said to his wife, O dear! When I ask for money from the rich, they refuse me. A household cannot run without money, that is why if you agree, I will go abroad and do some work, because scholars have praised karma.

The Brahmin’s wife said in a polite manner, O Swami! I am your maid. Whatever the husband says, good or bad, the wife should do the same. Man gets the fruits of his deeds done in his previous birth. Despite living on Mount Sumeru, a man does not get gold without luck. People who donate knowledge and land in their previous birth get knowledge and land in their next birth. Whatever God has written in destiny cannot be avoided.

If a person does not donate, then God gives him only food, that is why you should stay at this place, because I cannot bear your separation. Without a husband, a woman’s mother, father, brother, father-in-law and relatives all criticize her, that is why O Lord! Please don’t go anywhere, whatever is in your destiny, you will get it here.”

The Brahmin did not go abroad following the woman’s advice. Time continued to pass like this. Once sage Kaundinya came there. Seeing the sage, Brahmin Sumedha and his wife saluted him and said that today we are blessed. Today our life became successful due to your darshan.

He gave seat and food to the sage. After providing food, the devoted Brahmin said – “O Rishivar! Please tell me the method to eliminate poverty. I have stopped my husband from going to a foreign country and earning money. It is my good fortune that you have come. I have full faith that now my poverty will be destroyed soon, so please tell me some solution to eliminate our poverty.

Listening to the Brahmin, Rishi Kaundinya said, O Brahmin! By fasting on Param Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Malmas, all sins, sorrows and poverty etc. are destroyed. The person who observes this fast becomes rich. During this fast, night vigil should be done along with dancing, singing etc.

Lord Shankar had made Lord Kuber the head of wealth because of observing this fast. Due to the effect of this fast, the truthful king Harishchandra got a son, wife and kingdom. Sage Kaundinya told him all the rules of fasting on Ekadashi. The sage said, O Brahmani Panchratri fast is even better than this. On the day of Param Ekadashi, in the morning, after retiring from daily work, Panchratri fast should be started as per the rituals. Those people who fast without water for five days, go to heaven along with their parents and wife.

Those people who eat food in the evening for five days go to heaven. Those people who take bath and feed Brahmins for five days, get the reward of feeding the entire world. Those who donate a horse during this fast, get the reward of donating to all the three worlds.

Those who donate sesame seeds to a good Brahmin, they reside in Vishnuloka for a number of years equal to the number of sesame seeds. People who donate a pot of ghee go to the sun world. Those people who remain celibate for five days go to heaven along with the gods. Hey Brahmin! You observe this fast with your husband. With this you will definitely attain success and ultimately heaven.

As per the words of sage Kaundinya, the Brahmin and his wife observed fast for five days on Param Ekadashi. After the fast was over, the Brahmin’s wife saw a prince coming to her house. With the inspiration of Brahmaji, the prince provided him a perfect house, which was full of all things, for him to live. After that the prince gave one village for livelihood. Thus, with the effect of this fast, the Brahmin and his wife enjoyed eternal happiness in this world and finally went to heaven.

Lord Shri Krishna said, O Arjun, the person who observes fast on Param Ekadashi gets the fruits of all the pilgrimages and yagyas etc. Just as Brahmin is the best among the two-legged ones, cow among the four-legged ones, Devendra among the gods is the best, in the same way, among the months, Laund i.e. more month is the best.

Panchratri in this month is very auspicious. Padmini and Param Ekadashi are also best in this month. All sins are destroyed by fasting, hence a poor person must observe a fast. Those people who do not take bath and observe Ekadashi fast for most of the month, they commit the sin of committing suicide. This human form is achieved by great virtues, they go to heaven and enjoy the pleasures like Devraj Indra and are worshiped in all three worlds. That is why a person must observe Ekadashi fast.
