The Haryana government has asked the municipal bodies to appeal to all the slaughterhouses of the state to stop selling meat during the festival ‘Paryushan Parva’ of the Jain community. In a letter sent to all the District Municipal Commissioners and Commissioners of Municipal Corporations, the Urban Local Bodies Directorate said that this year Paryushan festival is being celebrated from August 20 to 28.

In a letter issued by an officer of Joint Director Level by the Director General, “I have been instructed by the competent authority to request you to request all the slaughterhouses coming to the Municipal Corporation boundary to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle during Paryushan festival from August 20 to August 28, 2025.”

‘Do not sell meat till 28 August’

According to official sources, the slaughterhouses have been appealed not to sell meat from 20 to 28 August.

What did Mumbai HC say about the closure of slaughterhouses?

Let me tell you that earlier on Wednesday, the Mumbai High Court refused to give any relief to the members of the Jain community on the request to close the slaughterhouses in the city for 10 days during their Paryushan festival.

A bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne said that she respects the sentiments of the community, but the question is, where she (the community) has the right to demand the slaughterhouses to be closed for 10 days (from which statutory provisions).

The petitions challenged the order passed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner on August 14, allowing slaughterhouses to be closed for only two days.

Why do Paryushan festival celebrate?

Jain religious religious people celebrate the festival to focus on spiritual thinking, self-purification and forgiveness. During the festival of Paryushan, Jains do religious fasting, penance, meditation and self-thinking and apologize for previous sins. This festival gives Jains an opportunity to contemplate their lives and apologize to others.

People of this religion cannot think of any living beings, animals, birds, even small insects and damage to somehow kill or harm. Because every living creature has the right to survive.

People of Jainism also apologize to insects

Jain literature states- “Do not hurt any creature or living creature, do not abuse, do not suppress, do not make slaves, do not insult, do not suffer, do not torture or kill.” People of Jainism avoid damaging any living creature, including insects, because no creature should hurt by mind, word or deed, no matter how micro -organisms are. Based on the principle of religion-

• Every creature has a soul and it can attain salvation
• Unknown violence is also a sin. Inadvertently, if insects or micro-organisms are killed, then it is necessary to atone for it.
• On the day of Paryushan festival and forgiveness, Jain followers apologize for all kinds of violence (killing of insects) in unknowingly.
• “Michmi Dukkadam” is a symbol of forgiveness and repentance in Jainism. This means that, “If I have deliberately hurt you, then Please excuse me.” In this, people of Jainism apologize from all living beings, even insects and insects.
