Thalapathy Vijay MLA Seats : Tamil cinema superstar Thalapathy Vijay has given such a political performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections which has attracted the attention of the entire country. His party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), contesting elections for the first time, changed the equation of Tamil Nadu politics by winning more than 100 seats in the 234-member assembly. Vijay himself contested from two seats, Perambur seat and Tiruchirapalli East seat and won both the places, but now the biggest question arising is whether Vijay will get double salary for winning two seats. The discussion on this question has intensified on social media. The question in the minds of people is that when a leader becomes MLA from two places, does he get the salary and facilities of both the seats. Will Vijay get double salary?

In India, an MLA or MP gets the salary and facilities of only one post. A leader may win from two seats, but he cannot remain the MLA from both the seats. Therefore, he will get salary, allowances and government facilities only according to one seat.

What does the law say?

Election related rules in India are decided under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. According to this law, a candidate can contest from maximum two seats in one election. Earlier there was no such rule. Before 1996, leaders used to contest elections from multiple seats, but later the law was changed and a maximum limit of two seats was fixed. In such a situation, if a candidate wins from two seats, he cannot keep both the seats with himself. He has to give up one seat within the stipulated time. If he does not do so, both the seats can be considered vacant.

Why do leaders contest elections from two seats?

Political parties and big leaders contest elections from two seats for many strategic reasons. If there is defeat on one seat then victory on the other seat is assured. Vijay chose two seats to show his hold in both Chennai and Central Tamil Nadu regions. By fighting at two places, the party gets advantage on nearby seats also.

Which seat can Vijay keep?

Till now Vijay has not made any official announcement. But Vijay can keep such a seat from where the party can get more political benefits in future. On the seat which Vijay will leave, re-election i.e. by-election will be held there. According to law, by-elections are usually held within 6 months. After Vijay’s victory, the debate on ‘One Candidate, One Constituency’ i.e. one candidate, one seat has again intensified. Many people believe that contesting elections from two seats puts additional burden on democracy.
