Petrol-Diesel Price on June 14: Fuel prices in the country remained stable on Sunday, June 14. The last time prices were increased was on Monday, May 25, when oil marketing companies (OMCs) increased the prices of both petrol and diesel by more than Rs 2.50 per litre.

It is noteworthy that since May 15 till now, the overall fuel prices have increased by about Rs 7.5 per liter. The special thing is that after the prices remained almost stable for more than two years, except for a cut of Rs 2 per liter in March 2024, the prices of petrol and diesel in India are at their highest level since May 2022.

Why did oil prices increase?

The reason for this increase in prices is the tense situation between Iran, America and Israel. Due to this, the Strait of Hormuz has been blockaded. This is an important sea route for supplying oil and gas around the world, which is controlled by Iran.

There are reports that America and Iran are getting closer to an agreement to reopen the ‘Strait of Hormuz’. This agreement can be signed during the meeting of leaders of ‘Group of Seven’ (G7) countries next week. However, it is also being said that the aggressive attitude of America and Iran towards each other has increased the concerns.

‘Oil prices will come down’

Union Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is hopeful that fuel prices will come down in the coming months. He assured that despite the war situation, India has sufficient stocks. “Oil prices cannot remain at their current high levels for very long and are expected to decline in the coming months,” he said.

According to Reuters report, Puri said that additional supplies to India from Canada and America are expected to fill some of the shortfall, but he also said that the situation may change if the war escalates.

Petrol-Diesel Rate Today on June 13: The prices of petrol and diesel are fluctuating amid the ongoing conflict in Iran and increasing tension around the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, according to a government order, the government has banned industrial, commercial and institutional users from purchasing petrol and diesel from petrol pumps and has asked them to purchase the fuel required from bulk sales points.

According to the report of news agency PTI, these restrictions will remain in force for 90 days. The move came after bulk customers started buying fuel from petrol pumps due to price differentials, leading to an unusual increase in demand for fuel, especially diesel, in some areas. The price of diesel at petrol pumps in Delhi is Rs 95.20 per liter, while its price in wholesale sale is Rs 134.50.

Due to rising prices of crude oil globally, government retailers have started passing on the burden of increased costs to customers to recover some part of their huge losses. Under this, on May 25, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) increased the prices of both petrol and diesel by more than Rs 2.50 per liter, taking a total increase of Rs 7.50 per liter since May 15. The prices of petrol and diesel in India are at their highest level in the last 4 years. Over the past two years, fuel prices have remained mostly stable except for a cut of Rs 2 per liter in March 2024.

Petrol will be cheaper in Mumbai tomorrow

According to PTI report, on the occasion of Raj Thackeray’s 58th birthday on June 14, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) will provide petrol at concessional rates to two-wheeler drivers. The party has tied up with 36 petrol pumps across the city to provide petrol at concessional rates from 9 am on Sunday. However, this facility being provided by MNS will be applicable only in Mumbai.

Cheapest petrol in the country

The cheapest petrol in India is available in Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The price of petrol here is only Rs 82.46 per liter. Diesel is also available here at an affordable rate of Rs 78.05 per liter compared to the rest of the country. The prices here are low because the central government has decided to limit the local VAT to only 1 percent.

Where is the cheapest fuel in big cities?

The price of petrol and diesel in Delhi is lower than other metros of the country such as Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai, which are Rs 97.77 and Rs 90.67 per liter respectively. At the same time, prices are higher in Mumbai, where petrol is being sold at Rs 103.54 per liter and diesel at around Rs 90.03 per liter. Petrol prices remain above Rs 100 per liter in most metro cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata, while diesel prices remain below the Rs 100 mark.

Stable prices after May 2022

Despite fluctuations in global crude oil markets, petrol and diesel prices in India have remained largely stable for the last few years. There has been no major change in the prices of petrol and diesel in India since May 2022. During that time, prices remained stable for a long time after the Central Government reduced the excise duty (Rs 8 on petrol and Rs 6 on diesel).

Retail fuel prices are influenced by many factors, including global crude oil prices, rupee-dollar exchange rate, central and state taxes, transportation costs and demand-supply equation. Since India imports a large part of its crude oil, any fluctuations in global prices or changes in currency exchange can impact domestic fuel rates.
