After the tariff bomb of US President Donald Trump, if any industry in the country was facing the greatest threat, it is the pharma sector. Have you ever wondered which medicines are manufactured the most by the Indian pharma industry, which meets about 80% of the medicine consumption in America? Apart from this, what planning is going on in this sector for your health? Let us know.

This is the government’s planning

According to Dr. R. Chandrashekhar, Joint Medicine Controller of the Central Drugs Standards Control Organization, special emphasis is currently being laid on Research and Development (R&D) in the Indian pharma industry. Its objective is to manufacture generic medicines as well as develop new medicines and technology. Under this, the Government of India has started a big scheme called Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma-MedTech Sector (PRIP), on which about Rs 5,000 crore will be spent. Under this scheme, private sector companies, startups and MSMEs are being given financial help for research.

He told in the 18th CPHI and PIMEC India Expo organized at the Expo Center in Greater Noida that the new hospital finance scheme of Rs 1 lakh crore will strengthen research and development in the pharma sector of the country. He said that at present India is called the pharmacy of the world, but with the Hospital Finance Scheme, the country will move towards developing from the pharmacy of the world to an innovation-led pharma nation in the next five years.

Which medicines does the pharma industry make?

Namit Joshi, chairman of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India, said that India’s pharma industry is currently known as ‘Generics Hub’ all over the world. Now the global pharmaceutical field is changing rapidly. In such a situation, to remain the pharmacy of the world, India will have to move ahead from its traditional generics mentality and focus on value based innovation. Besides, our capabilities will have to be increased in peptides, complex generics, biosimilars, biologics and cell and gene therapies.

India is becoming self-reliant in pharma sector also

According to Yogesh Mudras, MD of Informa Markets in India, India’s pharmaceutical sector has shown great growth. Due to this, exports have doubled to 30 billion US dollars. This is changing rapidly as India is strengthening its hold in traditional generics, complex formulations, biologics and advanced treatments.

India has reacted to this after the US has announced a tariff of up to 100% on branded and patented medicines from October 1. Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said that it has been closely monitored. Jaiswal told in the press briefing that India is constantly monitoring the matter.

Jaiswal said that after receiving notices related to the new tariff on social media, India has seen reports on pharma and other related products. He informed that the concerned ministries and departments are closely monitoring the matter and are studying its possible impact.

India gives most generic medicines to America
India is the world’s largest supplier of generic drugs and exports more than one-third of drugs consumed in the US. These drugs are not under patent and are cheaper than branded editions. Trump’s 100% tariff focuses on branded drugs, but industry experts say that the absence of generic drugs in Trump’s order does not eliminate the risk for India.

Trump announced on social media
The US President wrote on social media platform Truth Social, ‘From 1 October 2025 we will impose 100 percent tariffs on any branded or patent pharmaceutical products, until the company is building its pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in the US.’

Trump put new tariffs on separate imports
In his recent tariff decision, Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on kitchen cabinet and bathroom vanities, 30% on chairs and couchs and 25% on heavy trucks. Although Trump did not give any legal reason for these tariffs, he said that these taxes are necessary for “national security and other reasons”, which challenged the limits of role as his commander-in-chief.

India’s pharma sector has slipped badly in the first half of 2025. While the Nifty 50 index recorded an increase of about 8 percent, the Nifty Pharma Index declined by more than 6 percent, which means that the pharma sector has joined the second worst performing sectors in the market. The trust of investors seems to be staggering from this sector, especially due to domestic challenges and global uncertainties.

Shares of big pharma companies fell

The effect of this decline has been seen on almost the entire sector. The stock of Natco Pharma broke around 34 percent, which is believed to be the biggest decline. IPCA Labs also saw more than 20 percent decline. Shares of Aurobindo Pharma, Lupin, Granules India, Mankind Pharma, Ajanta Pharma and Alkem Labs have also fallen between 12 to 20 percent. Even considered strong companies such as Biocon, Cipla, Dr. Reddy’s, JB Chemicals, and Sun Pharma also could not escape the loss.

Some companies showed strength

However, even in this difficult period, some pharma companies have performed better. Laurus Labs gained 19 percent lead, while Abbott India rose by 16 percent. Divi’s Labs and Glenmark Pharma also gained 10 percent and 8.6 percent. Apart from this, names like Torrent Pharma and Zydus Life have also made a minor advantage.

What are the reasons for the decline?

There are many important reasons behind this decline in the pharma sector. First, the large selling of foreign institutional investors (FII) has hurt this sector, especially export-focused companies. The second major reason is the global economic lethargy, America-China trade tension and high interest rates.

The most fear is about American policies. US President Donald Trump has indicated in April and June that he may impose a tariff of up to 25 percent on pharmaceutical products. Since many companies in India export generic and specialty medicines to America, this policy may be overshadowed for them.

What to understand from Nuvama’s report?

Brokerage firm Nuvama Institutional Equites said in its report that big pharma companies are facing risk about American policies and their product mix. However, the company has also said that some areas such as CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organizations) and GLP-1 drugs are attracting investors.

Strong product pipelines of companies like Cipla, which have products such as Gabraxane and GSYMBICORT, can reduce investors’ anxiety. At the same time, Aarti Pharmalabs, Divi’s, and Dr. in CDMO sector Companies like Reddy’s are getting good response.

Positivity remains in healthcare sector

Nuvama believes that there is a lot of growth in the healthcare infrastructure sector. Companies like Laxmi Dental, Jupiter Lifeline, Suraksha, Aster DM, and Jeena Sikho are increasing the capacity of hospitals and investing in digital tools. This is expected to improve both revenue and profits in the coming time.

Jammu kashmir terror attack: After the Pahalgam terror attack, India’s action seems to be hovering over Pakistan in many ways. In such a situation, it is being said that there can be shortage of medicines in Pakistan.

According to the report of Geo News, currently Pakistan is dependent on 30 percent to 40 percent of raw materials with drugs, including active pharmaceutical material (API) and many advanced medical products. Pakistan’s Drug Regulatory Authority (DRAP) has confirmed that although no formal notification has been given about the impact of the ban on the drug sector, contingency plans are already prepared.

Finding options in China, Russia and European countries
A senior DRAP official said that after the 2019 crisis, we started preparations for such emergency. Now we are considering alternative routes to meet the needs of our medicine. DRAP is now looking for alternative sources from China, Russia and many European countries.

The agency aims to ensure continuous availability of essential medical supplies including anti-rabies vaccine, anti-stenam, cancer therapy, monoclonal antibodies and other important biological products. Even though the DRAP assures that we have prepared, the internal sources and health experts in the pharma industry have warned that if immediate action is not taken to deal with the ill effects of business suspension, a big challenge can be created.

Medicines come to Pakistan through smuggling
The Ministry of Health has not yet received any official instructions to clarify the status of drug imports, while the government has announced to suspend all trade with India. The drug sector is afraid that interruptions in the supply chain may cause a serious problem in Pakistan. The situation is also serious about the black market of drugs in Pakistan, where unregistered and disarray medicines, of which are of Indian origin, come through smuggling in Pakistan through Afghanistan, Iran, Dubai and even the eastern border.

Appeal to exemption the drug sector from the ban
A delegation of pharmaceutical industry leaders went to Islamabad on Thursday to appeal for exemption from trade ban. Tauqir-ul-Haq, president of the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA), said that we held meetings with DRAP and Ministry of Commerce Ministry officials to discuss the suspension of trade relations. We urged them to exempt the drug sector from the ban, because there are many life -saving products whose raw materials especially come from India.
