The Indian Foreign Ministry made it clear on Thursday that there was no telephonic conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump yesterday (Wednesday). External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in the weekly briefing, ‘I have no knowledge of any conversation or phone call between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump yesterday.’

Trump had claimed to have talked to PM Modi
This statement has come after the recent remarks of US President Trump. Trump had said that Prime Minister Modi assured him that India will no longer buy oil from Russia. Trump described it as ‘a big step’, which will help in increasing global pressure on Moscow in view of the Ukraine crisis.

Trump said- ‘Modi is my friend’
When Trump was asked late on Wednesday night whether he considered India a reliable partner, he said, ‘Yes, absolutely.’ He (PM Modi) is my friend. We have a very good relationship. I did not like that India was buying oil from Russia. He assured me today that now India will not buy oil from Russia. This is a big step. Now we will have to do the same with China.

MEA reiterated India’s policy
In response to these comments, MEA had already clarified that India’s energy policy is made keeping in mind only the national interest and the safety of Indian consumers. The ministry said that India is a large importer of oil and gas and its priority has always been to ensure stable prices and secure supply, for which imports are done from diverse sources.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he made a “very good” phone call with Brazilian President Luiz Eneasio Lula Da Silva. Trump described this conversation as important and described it as a positive step towards improving relations between the two countries.

Trump said that he had also met Lula in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Trump recalled, “I was going to give a speech and I did not have a teleprompter.
