Following the success of Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army recently conducted a live firing drill of the indigenous Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launch System at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan. This is also being seen as a strong message of India’s military preparedness against Pakistan.

Why is it called ‘Pinaka’?

This rocket system has been named after the mythological bow of Lord Shiva ‘Pinaka’. Due to the multi-barrel design, this system is capable of firing multiple rockets simultaneously. DRDO has designed it, while companies like Tata Advanced Systems and Larsen & Toubro have developed it in public-private partnership model.

Ability to fire 72 rockets in 44 seconds

The specialty of Pinaka is its tremendous firing speed. It can launch 72 rockets in just 44 seconds, which are capable of hitting targets located approximately 60 kilometers away. Its upgraded version Pinaka MK-II ER can hit up to a range of 90 kilometers and a new version is being developed to hit a range of more than 150 kilometers.

Pinaka rockets are equipped with GPS based guided system. According to experts, they can reach a speed of Mach 4.7 i.e. about 5,800 kilometers per hour, which makes them extremely difficult to intercept.

Know how much it costs

There are currently four Pinaka regiments deployed in the Indian Army and formation of six additional regiments is underway. In a war situation, the main function of Pinaka is to cause heavy damage to sensitive areas of the enemy in a short time. In January, the government had approved purchasing ammunition worth Rs 10,200 crore for the Pinaka system. India has already exported it to Armenia and a possible deal with France is also under discussion.

Pinaka Rocket System: After the success of Operation Sindoor, the weapons made in India are growing rapidly in the whole world. The latest example of this is indigenous developed guided Pinaka rocket system, which is being seen internationally.

According to reports, countries like Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Indonesia have shown special interest in this rocket system. Major General V. Arya, Executive Director of Solar Industries, a company that manufactures Pinaka, said that these three countries have expressed their keen interest in buying guided Pinaka.

Earlier, Armenia bought a Pinaka rocket from India, which he used in a struggle against Azerbaijan. This makes it clear that Indian weapon technology is now considered to be reliable and effective globally.

What is the specialty of Pinaka?

The Pinaka Rocket System is a modern multi-barrelil rocket launcher (MBRL), which can fene 12 rockets at a time. One of its entire battery has the ability to drop up to 1 ton of explosives in the enemy’s territory in a few seconds.

Its guided version is even more deadly. Guided Pinaka has the ability to target the satellite and it can make an accurate attack of more than 75 kilometers.

How much does an estimated price of a guided rocket?

Pinaka’s guided version is much cheaper than America’s Himars System. The estimated price of a guided rocket is around $ 56,000 (about 4.6 crore rupees). At the same time, a unit, which includes launcher, fire control system and command posts, is priced between 140 and 150 crores. An entire regiment, which includes 6 launchers and all the necessary support systems, its cost is said to be around Rs 850 crore.

This state -of -the -art rocket system has been jointly developed by India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Solar Industries. Pinaka is being seen as a major success of ‘Make in India’, which is an important step towards making India self -reliant and world -class in the defense sector.
