A large population of India is deficient in Vitamin B12 which can become a serious challenge for our country. Many reports suggest that Vitamin B12 deficiency is prevalent among the vegetarian people of India. If there is a deficiency of Vitamin B12 in the body, then harmful effects are seen on health, in which the process of blood formation in the body is affected and the nerves are also directly affected.

The special thing is that this risk is greater in vegetarians because B12 is naturally found in animal-based food products. According to the survey, about 47% of the people of India have B12 deficiency which is a matter of concern.

Recently a video was seen on Instagram titled “Why are pure vegetarians deficient in Vitamin B12?” In this video, Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat has raised this issue which is very important to know for our health.

Why are vegetarians deficient in B12?

In this Instagram video, Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat, MD, Neurologist and General Physician, Department of Medicine and Neurology, AIIMS Hospital, Delhi, explains how vegetarians are deficient in Vitamin B12. Because plants do not need vitamin B12, they are unable to make it. This is why B12 is not found naturally in vegetarian diets. But our body needs the necessary amount of Vitamin B12 for the functioning of nerves, blood formation and keeping the brain healthy. In the video, Neurologist Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat has explained why there is Vitamin B12 deficiency in pure vegetarian people and what are its causes and how its deficiency affects health.

What effect does Vitamin B12 deficiency have on the body?

Due to Vitamin B12, red blood cells are formed in our body, due to which there may be deficiency of hemoglobin in the body and the quantity of blood may become low or weak. Without Vitamin B12, blood quality is affected and the body faces difficulty in maintaining energy and a healthy life.

Why is B12 important for nerves and brain?

Vitamin B12 is really essential for the cells of our body. It not only helps in making red blood cells but also helps in making DNA within new cells. Vitamin B12 helps maintain the protective covering (myelin) of our nerves, so its deficiency can have a direct impact on nerves, memory and mood.
